Mike’s career has spanned for over 38 years of instruction and playing experience. Mike’s awards have made him a recognizable icon in the golf world. He was named the 2010 Southwest Section’s PGA “Teacher of the Year” and most recently voted the 2011 “PGA National Teacher of the Year” in America. Then more unusual for a golf instructor, Mike also earned the 2011 “Senior Player of the Year” for the Southwest Section PGA.

The Picture Butte GC has opened nine holes on regular greens as of February 1st and is hoping to have another nine open by the weekend if the weather cooperates. The course's earliest previous opening date was March 11th in 2007. Fox Hollow GC in Calgary is also open on temporary greens, at least until the snow flies again.

Scott Allred of the Elbow Springs GC shot a final-round 6-under par 66 to finish in a tie for second at the 2011 PGA of Canada Club Professional Championship in Port St. Lucie, Florida. The PGA of Alberta announced today an agreement with Air Miles Reward Miles, whereby Golf Courses employing PGA of Alberta Members will be able to offer its customers the opportunity to collect reward miles on select purchases made. Golf Facilities throughout the province will be able to customize their own offerings and provide incentives to their clients based on their individual sales & marketing efforts. This agreement extends through March 2013.

Terry Carter and Darryl James of the National Golf Academy at McCall Lake won their second straight Callaway Golf Pro-Assistant today at Heritage Pointe GC. Carter and James made birdie on their final two holes to edge the Riverside Golf Academy team of Rob McLeay and Garett Jenkinson by a single shot. Three teams (Lakeside GC, Glendale G&CC and Royal Mayfair GC) finished three shots behind in a tie for third.

Dean Sklarenko and Dallas Lequyer of the Picture Butte GC shot a 9-under par round today at the Heritage Pointe GC to take a one-shot lead entering the final round of the 2011 Callaway Golf Pro-Assistant. Mike Belbin shot a 1-under round of 71 today to cap a great week at the Cherry Hill Club in Ontario and capture the 2011 PGA of Canada Assistants' Championship. Belbin defeated Bryn Parry by four shots for his first national title.

Keith Whitecotton (Edmonton Petroleum G&CC) defeated Dave Henzie (Calgary Elks Lodge & GC) six and five at the Red Deer G&CC to win the 2011 Match Play Championship. Dale Tomlinson (Carstairs GC) defeated Tyson Cote (Lewis Estates G&CC) to win the Consolation bracket four and three.

Head Professional Dean Sklarenko and Apprentice Chris DiPasquale of the Picture Butte GC combined for a best-ball score of 7-under 64 to win the 2011 G&G Golf Company Pro-Pro Best Ball today at The Ranch GC. Blair Buttar and Greg McGarry of the Glendale G&CC finished one shot behind after a 6-under 65, while three other teams finished in a tie for third at 5-under for the event.

On Saturday September 10th Peter David Cushner passed away at the age of 60. He is survived by his wife Cheryl and 3 children, Nicole, Natalie and Ryan. Peter had been a member of the Canadian Tour in the early 70,s before working as an Assistant Professional at the Derrick Golf Club (Edmonton) & the Broadmoor Golf Club (Sherwood Park). He went on to spend 25 years as the Head Professional at the Lloydminster Golf Club. Among his many tournament victories Peter was an Alberta & Saskatchewan PGA Champion along with a Saskatchewan Senior PGA Championship. His sportsmanship and exemplary play moved the PGA of Saskatchewan to name there order of merit the "Peter Cushner Award". He was a Board member and a Past President of the PGA of Saskatchewan. His service was held on Saturday September 17th In Edmonton and was attended by family, friends along with a number of brother Golf Professionals.

Keith Whitecotton of the Edmonton Petroleum G&CC will defend his 2010 Match Play Championship in this year's final against Dave Henzie of the Calgary Elks Lodge GC on Friday, September 16th at the Red Deer G&CC. On the consolation side, Tyson Cote of the Lewis Estates GC will take on Dale Tomlinson of the Carstairs GC. The final matches hit the course beginning at 10:32am.

Robert Toshack of the Academy at Golf Town - Edmonton North won the final stop on the 2011 Callaway Professional Series today at the Sundre GC, shooting a 2-under par 70 to hold off Mike Fahey of the Goose Hummock GR by a single shot. Riverside GC in Edmonton celebrated its 60th anniversary on August 22nd, 2011 with a nine-hole tournament and rededication ceremony. Long-time members shared stories of the changes to the golf course over the past 60 years, making it one of the country's busiest municipal courses.

Scott Allred of the Elbow Springs GC followed up his first-round 72 with an even-par 71 in the final round to take home his first PGA of Alberta Senior Championship today at the Windermere G&CC. Allred defeated two-time defending champion Gord Courage of the CC of the Hamptons by four shots after Courage shot the low round of the event, a 3-under 68. Darrell McDonald of the Mill Woods GC finished alone in third place five shots behind Allred, while Burt Drysdale, a PGA of Alberta Life Member, won the Super Senior title for players aged 60 or over.

Mike Belbin of the Royal Mayfair GC won his second straight Golf Supply House Assistants' Championship today at the Stony Plain GC. Belbin added a 1-under par 71 to his first-round 66 for a three-shot victory over Darryl James of the National Golf Academy at McCall Lake. Belbin made eagle on the par-4 17th after two consecutive bogeys on 15 and 16 to finally distance himself from James after a hard-fought battle throughout the back nine. Jamie Gerlitz of the Lacombe G&CC finished alone in third place at 3-under for the tournament.

Darryl James of the National Golf Academy at McCall Lake shot a 3-under par 68 to take home Individual Professional honours.

Canyon Meadows' Associate Professional Matt Freeman and partner Jeff Farris won the 2011 Riley's Best Ball title on Sunday at their home course. The team combined for a 2 & 1 win over Clayton Olson and Cam Duncan from Heritage Pointe GC. On the Senior Men's side, Priddis Greens G&CC Head Professional Ron Laugher and partner George Mader took home the title, while Willow Park Associate Professional Cathy Burton and G & G Golf Company sales rep Kim Carrington took home the Ladies' championship.

On Tuesday, June 21st, four CPGA Golf Professionals from the Windermere Golf & Country Club made the best of the summer solstice by holding their 2nd Annual Longest Day of Golf charity fundraiser. The pros played from sun up till sun down and raised more than $11,700 for KidSport, a children’s charitable organization that helps kids from low-income families participate in organized sport programs.

The PGA of Alberta Players' Tour will be heading to the Leduc G&CC on Tuesday June 7th and Wednesday June 8th as 40 of the province's Club Professionals tee it up in the 2nd of 4 events.

Several Edmonton-and-area Professional recently participated in a National Golf in Schools program awareness day. The event was covered by Curtis Stock of the Edmonton Journal. "It's not just golf. See what happened in Edmonton when CPGA Professionals,Trevor Goplin and Adam Werbicki of the Derrick Golf & Winter Club, teamed up with Alberta Golf and Golf Professionals in the area to promote junior golf.

The May 16th Callaway Professional Series event scheduled for Kananaskis Country GC has been cancelled as the golf course will not be open by the tournament date. A new venue and date will be found for this event and those currently signed up will have first right of refusal for their spot.

The draw has been posted for the 2011 PGA of Alberta Match Play Championship. This year's brackets are a tribute to the Association's history, highlighting four great players and golf professionals. Round 1 must be completed no later than Monday, May 23rd.

Bill Quilley, a Life Member of the CPGA, passed away Wednesday April 27 in Edmonton at age 77 after battling prostate cancer. Details of a service to be held at the Highlands G&CC are attached.

Please be advised that the location for the 1st Professional Series event of 2011 has changed from the Medicine Hat G&CC to the Connaught GC. At this point, tee times will remain the same as an 11:30am start.

The PGA Championship of Canada will make a return to the national tournament schedule this season, and Cottonwood G&CC in DeWinton will play host from June 14th - 18th. The tournament will be conducted as a match play championship between the highest-ranked 64 players from the Canadian PGA Player Rankings.

Brett Burgeson (Country Hills GC), Mike Belbin (Royal Mayfair G&CC), and Darryl James (National Golf Academy) ranked in the top 15 on the CPGA National Player Rankings. Other PGA of Alberta Members in the top 100 Player Rankings include; Chris Toth (Riverside GC), Blair Buttar (Glendale G&CC), Scott Allred (Elbow Springs GC), and Todd Fiske (River Bend GC).

Following the success of the Edmonton Golf Show two weeks ago, this past weekend's Calgary Golf Show also marked a huge success with approximately 4,500 Calgary-and-area golfers walking through the door to see what the coming season has to offer. Those consumers also contributed to record-setting Clearance Centre numbers, which surpassed $150,000 for the first time in the history of the Shows.

Mike Belbin of the Royal Mayfair GC came from four shots back today at Inglewood G&CC to become the 2010 Golf Supply House PGA of Alberta Assistants' Champion for the second time in three years. Belbin added a 4-under 67 to his 5-under 66 from Round 1 to pass Jamie Kureluk of Cottonwood G&CC and take home a two-shot win. Kureluk finished the day in second place, while Troy Prusky finished alone in third place at 3-under.

Congratulations to Brett Burgeson of the Country Hills GC, who finished 7th at the 2009 Canadian Club Professional Championship held at the PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, FL. Burgeson was one of three players in the field of 104 Head Professionals and Executive Professionals from across the country who shot 3 consecutive rounds under par.

After battling a brain tumour diagnosed in July, Ron Belbin passed away on November 16, 2009 at the age of 63. A Memorial Service has been set for Friday, November 20th at 2pm. The service will be held at the Connelly-Mckinley Millwoods Chapel located at 4820 Meridian St. (Hwy 14/Whitemud).

All four players enter the third and final round with a chance to win their first national Assistants' title, with Belbin and James leading the way at the top of the leaderboard.

Gord Courage of the CC of the Hamptons shot a second straight under-par round today to win the 2009 Bridgestone Senior Championship at Highlands GC. Kevin Day of Billy D's Golf Centre finished alone in second, four shots ahead of PGA of Alberta Life Members Frank Fowler and Wayne Stark, who also shared the Super Senior title for players over 60 years of age.

Brett Burgeson, Head Professional at the Country Hills GC in Calgary won the Professional Division of the Cutter & Buck Pro Lady, shooting 67 to defeat a field of 43.

Joel Monk, Head Professional at the Heatherglen GC in Calgary joined his sister Kathryn Schneider at the Cottonwood G&CC, where the pair grew up as juniors, to win the 2009 PGA of Alberta Cutter & Buck Pro Lady.

The draw has been posted for the season's first Players' Tour event at Jasper Park Lodge GC on Tuesday and Wednesday, June 2nd and 3rd.

The draw is up for the 2009 Cutter & Buck Pro-Lady South. The tournament will take place on Monday, June 1st at Cottonwood G&CC.

The Wilson Staff - Loft 8 Club Challenge Pro Am has been rescheduled to September 8th at 10am at the Alberta Springs Golf Resort.

Jonny White isn’t a new face at the Canmore Golf Club, but he will be taking on a new role this golf season. White received his CPGA card at the end of last season and he will now be taking a more active role at the golf course. “It was something I have always wanted to do,” said White. “When I was younger I always said I wanted to become a golf professional. And it wasn’t to play on Tour, it was a teaching professional.”

Being a club professional can be a demanding job, and Silvertip’s new head golf professional, Kelli Fry, feels it can detract women from getting their pro cards.
