Fairmont Banff Springs Golf Club maintains lofty status
Way back in 1939, the National Golf Review magazine tabbed Stanley Thompson’s masterpiece in Banff National Park as the eighth-best course anywhere in the world. “So today, as we look at it, we’re constantly reminded that we’re here to be the custodians of that and make sure we maintain that vision.” said Steven Young, the director of golf at Fairmont Banff Springs. SCOREGolf Magazine’s latest rundown of the Top 100 Courses in Canada was revealed Saturday, and Banff Springs checks in at No. 6 in the biannual rankings. Other area courses to crack SCOREGolf’s Top 100 include the Links Course at Wolf Creek (30), Calgary Golf & Country Club (31), Stewart Creek (35), the Hawk at Priddis Greens (42) and Heritage Pointe (95). D'Arcy Ranch Alberta's own quiet frontier
From horse-play to course-play — that’s the history of D’Arcy Ranch Golf Club. D’Arcy Ranch was once the site of a racetrack and quarter-horse operation, and the late Jerry D’Arcy — the founder of the course — is a past president of the Calgary Stampede. “It’s 15 minutes south of Calgary now, but you pull in, and you don’t hear cars buzzing around. You really don’t hear anything,” said longtime Head Professional Tim Watt. “You have the mountains in the backdrop. It’s quiet. It’s scenic. You have the deer running around and the coyotes running around. Click here to read the full story by Wes Gilbertson, Calgary Sun.

“A lot of golfers will approach a putt thinking that their target is so many inches or feet outside of the hole,” said Chow. “Instead, I like to find a point about halfway between you and the hole — the apex or the highest point the ball will travel before it starts to break — and aim for that spot.” Click here to read the full tip from Golf Professional Kevin Chow (Blackhawk GC).

Monasterski, who has never played the game, is Marten’s latest challenge. “I’ve taught lots of beginners before. But not in this kind of a controlled environment. As long as she keeps trying, I think I can make some real progress with her,” said Martens, who was named Canada’s Teaching Professional of the Year in 2012.Click here to read the full story by Curtis Stock of the Edmonton Journal.
