PING Club Pro Championship
The 2016 PGA of Alberta Club Pro Championship sponsored by PING Canada will be taking place next week on August 2nd and 3rd at the Calgary G&CC. Defending Champion Darryl James (National Golf Academy @ Shaganappi) will lead a stacked field of 68 of Alberta’s top Executive Professionals, Head Professionals, and Head Teaching Professionals into the two-day stroke play Championship all vying for a slice of the $22,150 purse. Tee times will begin at 10:30am on August 2nd and 7:00am on August 3rd. Click here to view the current field and draw.

Shaw Charity Classic Qualifiers
The PGA of Alberta will again be hosting two qualifiers for the 2016 Shaw Charity Classic. The Pre-Qualifier which is open to Amateurs and Professionals alike, aged 50 years or older, will be taking place at the Calgary Elks Lodge & GC on August 25th. Those who qualify for the Event Qualifier will head to The Hamptons GC on August 30th. The Shaw Charity Classic will be taking place at Canyon Meadows G&CC from August 31st to September 4th. Team Match Play – North and South Finals Set
Round four is now complete for the PGA of Alberta Team Match Play Championship which began back on May 18th. The final four teams will now advance on to the South and North finals. The South final will be MacGregor/Stanier vs. Locke/Becker while the North finals includes Lavallee/Cantera vs. Anderson/Timms. Teams will have until August 20th to complete their round five match-up. Click here to see the updated brackets.

Goose Hummock Hosts Pro-Junior North
Today, Goose Hummock GR welcomed 28 teams to their course for the Pro-Junior North. The low gross title went to Ryan McDermott (The Links at Spruce Grove) and Austin Noskiye, who shot a score of 7-under par 64. The host team, Goose Hummock GR, made up by Mike McEvay and Owen Lai took the low net award after shooting a low score of 62. The Individual Professional side ended with a three way tie for first place with a score of 70. Jordan Rodda of Sturgeon Valley G&CC birdied the first playoff hole to claim his first PGA of Alberta title. Click here for full tournament results.

Scholarship Deadline Extended
The PGA of Alberta is once again offering a scholarship opportunity for junior players entering post-secondary schools. For 2016 there will be 4 PGA of Alberta Junior Scholarships of $1000 each. Two of these scholarships will be awarded to children of PGA of Alberta Members (no golf experience needed) and the other two will be awarded to selected Alberta Junior boys or girls, 18 years or younger, who meet the specific golf criteria. Application forms must be submitted by August 5, 2016. Click read more to access the package and forward to any eligible juniors.

Risdon Holds On to Win Assistants’ Championship
Competition was strong as round one leader, Dustin Risdon (National Golf Academy @ McCall Lake) and Wes Heffernan (Golf Canada Centre) battled hole by hole in round two to work their way towards the title. With five straight birdies starting his back nine at Mill Woods GC, Heffernan took the lead for a short time before Risdon’s comeback made things tense going into 18 with a tie. Heffernan’s short putt on 18 led Risdon to claiming the 2016 Assistants’ Championship title with a final score of 16-under par 128 over 36 holes. Heffernan finished in a close second with a 15-under par 129. Mike Belbin (Royal Mayfair GC) made a move from the rest of the field to place third, shooting two day total of 8-under par 136. Perfect playing conditions led to a great first round for many players at the 26th Cobra Puma Golf PGA of Alberta Assistants’ Championship. One shot shy of the course record, previously set by Mike Belbin (Royal Mayfair GC), Dustin Risdon (National Golf Academy @ McCall Lake) shoots an admirable 10-under 62 for the lead. The round one lowest score consisted of 10 birdies and 8 pars. Defending Champion and playing partner, Justin Stoski (Lethbridge CC) enjoyed watching Risdon prove why he is continuously a player to watch, stating ‘Risdon doesn’t miss any putts and has no bogeys… he doesn’t miss anything.’ In second, Wes Heffernan (Golf Canada Centre) posted a respectable 8-under par 64. Carding 6 birdies and an eagle, he is a good spot to challenge Risdon in round two. Keith Whitecotton (The Quarry) sits in third place carding a 66.Tied for fourth place are Blaine Kruger (Stony Plain GC) and Belbin at 67. Round two will pick back up with a 9:00am shotgun start. Pro-Junior Heads North to Goose Hummock GR
The draw is now posted for the second PGA of Alberta Pro-Junior event of 2016 this time being hosted by Goose Hummock GR. The event is taking place on Wednesday, July 27th with a 10am Shotgun start. Twenty-seven teams will battle it out to collect a slice of the $8,300 purse. Click here to see the current field and draw.

Assistants' Championship presented by COBRA PUMA GOLF
The draw for the 2016 PGA of Alberta Assistants' Championship presented by Cobra Puma Golf is now posted. Sixty-nine of the top Assistant Professionals will compete for a chance at the $19,000 purse and to be crowned this year’s Champion at Mill Woods GC in Edmonton. Last year’s Champion Justin Stoski (Lethbridge CC) will look to defend his title after winning last year with a 72-70 over the two days. This year’s format will be a shotgun start in groups of four beginning at 9am both rounds. To view the field and round one draw, click here.

7 Candidates pass at the Edmonton Garrison Memorial G&CC PAT
Congratulations to Cameron Cox (Priddis Greens G&CC), Ryan Nordin (Oxbow Country GC), Dustin Ranger (Edmonton Petroleum G&CC), Brandon Ryan (The Ranch G&CC), Jeanine Sears (Derrick G&WC), Chance Thomas (The Ranch G&CC) and Kyle Winters (The Quarry GC) on becoming Members of the PGA of Canada. Belbin’s solid ball striking through 36 holes leads him to his first Players’ Tour win of the 2016 season with 3-under 141 and a payout of $1,900. Sitting alone in second place is Timms with a tournament round of even par 144, earning him $1,150 of the $7,800 purse. Both Jacob Cartier (Sturgeon Valley G&CC) and Larry Petryk (Raven Crest G&CC) maintained their play to finish in the top, tied for third, carding two round totals of 1-over 145, making them $912.50 each.

Players' Tour hosted by Edmonton Garrison Memorial G&CC
Competing for a total purse of $7,800 and contending for a spot in the season ending Sunice Tour Championship, Jeff Cuthbertson (Stony Plain GC) shoots a 5-under par 67 to top the leaderboard after round one. Looking to better Cuthbertson in round two is Mike Belbin (Royal Mayfair GC) who sits one shot back at 4-under 68, Eric Locke (Priddis Greens G&CC) sitting 2 shots back at 3-under 69, and Jacob Cartier (Sturgeon Valley G&CC) who finished day one 1-under 71. PGA on Wheels has another successful event at Jumpstart Games
The PGA on Wheels headed to the Soccer Centre in SE Calgary for the second year in a row for the Jumpstart Games where hundreds of kids took part in various golf activities throughout the day. Thank you to every PGA of Alberta member that volunteered their time to support the PGA on Wheels program and provide hundreds of kids with one-on-one lessons. PGA on Wheels will be looking to attend one more event in the North before the season is over.

Third Players’ Tour Event at Edmonton Garrison Memorial G&CC
The third of four Players’ Tour events sponsored by FlightScope, Impact Canopies, and Jancor Agencies is scheduled to take place on July 18th and 19th at Edmonton Garrison Memorial G&CC. Professional Series at Stony Plain GC
The PGA of Alberta has found a new host venue at Stony Plain GC for the recently cancelled Professional Series at Trestle Creek GR. Stony Plain GC has graciously accepted to host the tournament on August 31st which will now be the final Professional Series event of 2016 and also count towards individual money earned for the Tour Championship on September 6 & 7 at Sundre GC. National Golf Academy @ McCall Lake takes home Low Net honours at the Pro-Junior South
The team of Dustin Risdon & Mark Janes of National Golf Academy @ McCall Lake took home Low Net honours today at the Strathmore GC in the 2016 Pro-Junior South. National Golf Academy shot a 10-under par score of 62 to edge out their closest competitors Stefan Cox & Carson Rody (Pinebrook G&CC) by 4 shots. Timothy Cameron & Arthur Deng of the Calgary Elks Lodge & GC combined for an excellent score of 5-under 67 to take home the Gross title. Dustin Risdon of National Golf Academy @ McCall, who grew up playing at Strathmore Golf Course, shot a 4-under 68 to also win the Individual Professional title. Burt Drysdale: In Memoriam (1949-2016)
Life Member, Burt Drysdale passed away on July 7, 2016 at the age of 67. Burt is survived by his wife Patsy, two children and grandchildren. Burt’s passion for the game of golf developed at the Calgary G&CC, where he was a caddie from 1963-1966. In 1969 Burt became a member of the PGA of Canada and worked as an Apprentice Professional under Bud Loftus and later Al Ewen. Over the span of his career Burt worked under many mentors honing his craft, and later became a respected mentor to many, at facilities including Redwood Meadows G&CC and Canyon Meadows G&CC. Those that knew Burt remember his passion for not only the game of golf but also the Association. A memorial service will be held in Calgary on Tuesday July 19th at 3:30pm at Canyon Meadows G&CC.Click here for Burt's obituary.

Nike Golf PGA Team Championship of Canada - Qualifier
The PGA of Alberta Qualifier for the Nike Golf PGA Team Championship of Canada saw 25 teams vying for a spot to represent Alberta at the National Championship, which will be played later this fall. Congratulations to the 7 teams which will be playing in the event hosted by The Mid Ocean Club in Bermuda. Three teams tied for low round of the day after all shooting a 62 at River Bend GC. Teams include, Matt Freeman (Canyon Meadows G&CC) and Murray Walter (Redwood Meadows G&CC), Dustin Risdon and Terry Carter (National Golf Academy @ McCall Lake), and Tyler Komick (The Golf Den – Edmonton) and Keith Whitecotton (The Quarry). PGA on Wheels a Huge Success at Canmore Canada Day Parade
A big thank you to Bill Dreger (Canmore G&CC), Chris Schatzmann (Stewart Creek G&CC), Conor Carnall (Banff Springs GC), Darren Cooke (Canmore G&CC), Tony Brown (Stewart Creek G&CC) and all the volunteers that helped make the PGA on Wheels event successful at the Canmore Canada Day Parade. The PGA on Wheels area saw hundreds of kids throughout the day take part in the various junior activities offered. The next PGA on Wheels event will be the JumpStart Games at the Subway Centre in Calgary on Thursday, July 14th. Under perfect playing conditions at Northern Bear GC, Kevin Black and Don Moroz (Redwood Meadows G&CC) claimed the trophy for low team net at the Greg Norman Pro-Senior with a 13-under 59.
