Calgarians dust off golf clubs as courses open
It’s now officially birdie (or bogey) season in Calgary, with a handful of hangouts opening for business last Friday or Saturday. “With the snow on the ground and how cold it was, I think this kind of snuck up on a lot of people,” said Play Golf Calgary’s Chief Operating Officer and PGA of Alberta Member Slade King, who prompted an outbreak of office fist-pumps with the announcement that both Blue Devil and Links of GlenEagles would be ready to roll Friday on full greens and tees. KENNETH MATSON IN MEMORIAM (1936-2017)
PGA of Canada Life Member, Kenneth Matson passed away on March 14, 2017 at the age of 80. He is survived by his wife, Bernice; daughters Brenda, Diana and Rhonda; and his 8 grandchildren and 4 great-grand-children. Born on December 13, 1936 in Toronto, Ontario, Ken began his love affair with golf as a teenager caddying at York Downs G&CC in Toronto. Bill Thompson, the Head Professional at the time, made a great impression on Ken. However, it wasn’t until he was almost 30 years old that Ken decided to take on golf as a career after spending his early working years at a variety of sales jobs. Jenkinson elected to Board of Directors. Goplin, McGarry and Sweenie re-elected
At the PGA of Alberta Annual General Meeting held March 6, 2017, Garett Jenkinson (Golf Performance Canada at Elbow Springs) was elected to the Board of Directors. Trevor Goplin (The Derrick G&WC), Greg McGarry (Glendale G&CC) and Tahlon Sweenie (Jasper Park Lodge GC) were all re-elected.
Kirkness elected to Assistants' Board. Chow & Thompson re-elected
At the PGA of Alberta Annual General Meeting held March 6, 2017, Sam Kirkness (Priddis Greens G&CC) was elected to the Assistants’ Board of Directors. Kevin Chow (Blackhawk GC) and Sean Thompson (Calgary G&CC) were both re-elected.
