57 of Alberta’s best junior players took to the Links Course at Wolf Creek Golf Resort over the last two days to contest the 2011 PGA of Alberta Sundog Junior Masters. While the first day provided ideal conditions for scoring, today’s second day was true to Wolf Creek’s Scottish links roots and provided a little bit of everything that Mother Nature has to offer: some sunshine, some rain, and plenty of wind and cool temperatures.
Through it all, the attitude of the 39 boys and 18 girls remained positive and it showed in some excellent scoring. On the Girls side, Jennifer Ha of the Glencoe G&CC became a three-time champion of this event, adding a 2-over par 73 to her day one 71 and taking home the title by six shots over Mieke Heyns of the Lethbridge CC. With the win, she adds the 2011 title to her previous wins in 2007 and 2009. Ha also took home the 18 & Under title with Heyns finishing in 2nd place, while other age group winners included Kat Kennedy of the Highwood G&CC (78-79-157) for the 16 & Under Girls and Jaclyn Lee of the Valley Ridge GC (79-76-155) for the 14 & Under Girls.
On the Boys side, Tyler Saunders of the Glendale G&CC posted the day’s best score for each round, shooting an even-par 71 today to go with a 3-under 68 from round one, for a 5-shot victory over Aaron Crawford of the Pinebrook G&CC. Clearly the Links Course at Wolf Creek agrees with Saunders’ game as today’s title adds to an already impressive resume at the course which includes the 2010 McLennan Ross Junior Tour title. Along with the overall title, Saunders also captured the 16 & Under age group with Crawford finishing in 2nd place. Other category winners included Patrick Murphy of the Collicutt Siding GC (75-74-149) for the 14 & Under Boys and Riley Fleming of the Collicutt Siding GC (73-72-145) for the 18 & Under Boys.
The 2011 edition of the Junior Masters marks the 5th straight year that Wolf Creek has hosted the Sundog Junior Masters and each year the players leave the course with nothing but positive things to say, from the opportunity to play one of Alberta’s best courses to the fantastic meals after each round.
