Rule Changes for 2019 Golf Season

The rules of golf have changed substantially. Officials from Golf Canada, the United States Golf Association and the Royal & Ancient made the most sweeping revisions to golf’s rules in more than 60 years this year. What does it mean to you? And did they go far enough? “The existing rule book was pretty complicated. They’ve made it easier to understand and they’ve simplified things,” said Dunc Mills, a level 2 referee with Alberta Golf, who has been helping with several clinics at golf courses across Alberta put on by Alberta Golf to explain the myriad of changes.

Golf: A Great Way to Get Active
Education News

Golf: A Great Way to Get Active

Did you know that more Canadians participate in golf than any other sport? 5.7 million Canadian golfers play over 60 million rounds of golf annually. Golf is especially popular with middle-aged and older Canadians.

Canadian physical activity guidelines recommend adults over 18 should accumulate at least 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous aerobic physical activity per week in bouts of at least 10 minutes.

Many people assume golf is a leisure activity and that golfers do not reach a high enough level of intensity to be counted toward their weekly activity goals. However, although not as intense as some sports, a golfer who walks a 9 or 18 hole course expends enough energy to classify golf in the moderate intensity group, meeting the physical activity guidelines.

Walking 18 holes carrying or pushing your clubs takes around four hours, requires 11,000 to 17,000 steps, covers 4-8 miles and expends 500 to 2,400 calories. If you add in a few hills, take more strokes, cover more ground between shots or are a little less fit, the numbers are more likely to be in the higher ranges. Using a cart decreases the overall numbers by 50% but it’s still better than sitting at home.

First Tournament Opens Today
Tournament News

First Tournament Opens Today

We hope everyone is excited for the 2019 PGA of Alberta tournament season! Our first tournament opens for registration today at 10am which is the Henderson Lake GC Golf Supply House Series on May 6th. Be sure to read the below information so you are aware of all tournament registration policies for this season.

Registration Process
Members will now register for tournaments 28-days prior to the event date and not all at once for the entire season. The reason for changing the registration process is to reduce the amount of withdrawals we see leading up to events as well as minimize the number of waitlists.

Payment
Payment will now be required at the time of registration and members will still have the ability to withdraw 2-weeks before the event with no penalty. After the 2-week mark, a withdrawal penalty will be incurred. If a member withdraws after the draw has been posted (Thursday of the week prior to event), they will forfeit their entire entry fee.

Withdrawal Penalty
The withdrawal fee has been increased to $50 this year. This increase is to further discourage members from signing up for events they are unsure they will play in. Please note the Withdrawal Deadline date on the tournament page.

If you have not submitted the 2019 Tournament Eligibility Form already, please do so by clicking here.
