A tale of optimism: Jason Vaughan, Head Professional at the Fort McMurray Golf Club, is anxious to return and rebuild.
Jason Vaughan, Head Professional at the Fort McMurray GC, might have been the only guy in the field at a PGA of Alberta Players’ Tour event this week in Calgary with a brand-new set of sticks. He left his Titleist clubs — two sets, actually — in his office at Fort McMurray Golf Club as wildfire forced a frantic evacuation of the city he has called home for more than a decade. “Leaving the course, you don’t really think, ‘Well, this is the last time we’re going to go back to this clubhouse,’ ” Vaughan said. “I left everything. I didn’t think to go grab anything, because you’re just thinking, ‘Let’s get out of here. Let’s get up the hill. Let’s be safe.’ “And then the next thing you know, we’re driving out of town and it’s a firestorm — literally.” Click here to read the full article by Wes Gilbertson, Calgary Herald.

Calgary’s Wes Heffernan tees up teaching gig but still plans to compete
“You just never know in the world of golf. But for now, for this year, I’m just focused on teaching and playing some local events and just being around Calgary more often to spend time with my family. It’s been pretty cool so far.” He’s yet to achieve his lifelong goal of scoring a spot on the PGA Tour, but Heffernan is one of Calgary’s pin-seeking success stories. He’s a four-time winner on what’s now the Mackenzie Tour, has twice teed it up at the U.S. Open and represented Canada at the World Cup of Golf in back-to-back years — as Mike Weir’s partner in 2007 and teaming up with Graham DeLaet in ’08.
