Darryl James turns attention to provincial crown
As Calgary’s Darryl James (National Golf Academy at Shaganappi) awaited confirmation last Tuesday that he’d qualified for the Champions Tour’s Shaw Charity Classic, Scott Allred (Elbow Springs) joked “that will just make it that much sweeter when I beat you next week.” Allred is the defending champion of the PGA of Alberta Senior Championship and has won the title twice in the past three years, but James might be considered the favourite for the two-day showdown at Willow Park after getting the opportunity to tee it up in Calgary’s Champions Tour stop. “It’s always a battle between Scott and I,” said James, the PGA of Alberta’s senior champ in 2012 and the runner-up to Allred last summer. His place on the leaderboard didn’t matter. Darryl James walked off the course at the Canyon Meadows Golf & Country Club beaming. After firing a 1-under 69 on Sunday to complete the Champions Tour Shaw Charity Classic, the other competitor from Calgary had every right to relish the moment. Calgary Golf Professional, Darryl James, qualifies for Stampede City Champions Tour stop

Finally, confirmation ... His spin of 2-under 68 was good enough to earn one of five spots in the field for the Champions Tour stop this week at Canyon Meadows Golf & Country Club. A solid field of 21 battled at The Hamptons GC on a soggy Thursday in the pre-qualifying tournament, vying for the right to play in Tuesday’s qualifier at Canyon Meadows. And Calgary’s Darryl James of the National Golf Academy at the Golf Dome — the 2007 and 2008 PGA of Alberta champion and four-time former Alberta Amateur champ — also made the cut, tying for the final spot with a 76. Longtime Pro at Hamptons GC shoots for Shaw Charity Classic invite
If Thursday’s Shaw Charity Classic pre-qualifier turns into a putting contest, you’ve gotta like Gord Courage’s chances. Courage, the Executive Professional, has been on staff at Hamptons Golf Club for the past two decades, and has had some cool opportunities during his tenure at Hamptons Golf Club, including teeing it up with legends such as Hale Irwin, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player and Lee Trevino during exhibitions at what is now a semi-private facility. If the 55-year-old can master the grainy greens at his home course Thursday, he’ll be one step closer to getting inside the ropes at the Shaw Charity Classic. The top-five finishers in the pre-qualifier will be invited to Tuesday’s final qualifier at Canyon Meadows.

Novice golfer makes steady progress under Martens guidance.
Two months ago Kristen Monasterski had never heard of the word ‘par’ let alone ever having hit a golf ball before. Yet Monasterski, 23, a complete, raw golf rookie who is working with Windermere Teaching Professional Cam Martens in a three-part series with ‘the Journal,’ has not only played nine holes of golf she recently shot a 58 at Leduc playing with her friends. “I thought it was awesome that she had enough confidence to go out on a golf course. This game is very intimidating” said Martens. Click here to read the full article (with video) by Curtis Stock.

David Clark: In Memoriam (1954 - 2014)
After a short battle with cancer, David Clark passed away on July 25, 2014 at the age of 60. Dave is survived by his wife Sharon and two children. Dave started playing golf at the age of 7 in Kingsville, Ontario and his love of the game led him to the PGA of Canada, which he joined in 1979. Those that knew Dave remember his passion for not only the game of golf but also the Association; he became involved at a board level taking on the role of President in 1994-1995. In 2003 Dave became President of the PGA of Canada where he remained a forward thinker, committed to seeing the Association progress under his leadership. A Memorial Service has been set for Wednesday, July 30 at 1pm. The service will be held at Wilson’s Funeral Chapel located at 6120 Highway 2A in Lacombe, AB. There will be a reception at the Lacombe G&CC following the service.
