Darryl James (National Golf Academy) came from behind to win the first PGA of Alberta Players’ Tour event of 2013 at the River Spirit GC with steady play, shooting rounds of 72-71. Finishing tied for second, 2 shots behind James, and earning $1033.00 were Mike Belbin (Royal Mayfair GC), Matt Freeman (Canyon Meadows G&CC) and Sean Thompson (Calgary G&CC).

Mike Belbin (Royal Mayfair GC) made a total of six birdies en-route to a 3-under 69. Garett Jenkinson (Riverside Golf Academy) and Kyle Wade will be looking to make a charge tomorrow sitting at 1-under 71’s. Matt Freeman (Canyon Meadows G&CC) & Darryl James (National Golf Academy) both sit three shots back tied for third with even-par 72 finishes.

The PGA of Alberta will be introducing Cyril Zupan and Robert Libbus as Player Ambassadors at the Players’ Tour events, Tour Championship, Club Pro, Assistants’ and PGA Championships. Chris Toth (Stony Plain GC) shot a 2-under 70 to win the second Golf Supply House Professional Series of 2013 by 1 shot over Kevin Day (Billy D's Golf Centre). Coming in third was Brack Little (Glendale G&CC) who shot an even par 72 which included an albatross on the ninth hole.

Jason Stanier (Inglewood G&CC) won in a 2 hole playoff against Brian Bassen (Strathmore GC) & Richard Stringer (Earl Grey GC) at the first tournament of 2013 at the Links of GlenEagles. Brian Bassen, Jason Stanier and Richard Stringer all shot 2-under 70 to finish tied after regulation. Matt Freeman shot a 1-under 71 to finish alone in fourth.

Thank you to everyone who helped make the 2013 Edmonton and Calgary Golf Shows a success. We saw a substantial increase in attendance at both shows and hit a record in the Clearance Centres (total of $321,000). A total of $12,319.00 was also raised for the Ronald McDonald House Northern Alberta and the Kids Cancer Care foundation.

At the Association’s Annual General Meeting in Calgary, Alberta, Brett Burgeson (Head Professional, Country Hills GC) succeeded Alan Carter (Executive Professional, Jasper Park Lodge) as Association President. Carter’s two–year term recently came to a close.

At the PGA of Alberta Annual General Meeting held March 4, 2013, Blair Felesky (Executive Professional, Pine Hills GC) and Matt Johnson (Head Professional, Windermere G&CC) were elected to the Board of Directors. Dale Tomlinson (Head Professional, Carstairs GC) and Gary Ward (Executive Professional, Edmonton CC) were re-elected.

On Thursday, February 28th, Trevor Goplin and Adam Werbicki of The Derrick G&WC along with Enid Botchett of Golf Canada organized a National Golf in Schools Awareness Day in Edmonton. 40 school teachers met with the group (including Josh Copeland of The Derrick G&WC, Matt Johnson, Troy Golden and Cam Martens of the Windermere G&CC, Greg McGarry and Blair Buttar of the Glendale G&CC and Jordan Rodda and Tyler Willner of the Sturgeon Valley GC) to learn more about the program through a classroom session and hands-on experience. The session was rated excellent by those in attendance "Fantastic! All golf pros were knowledgeable, helpful & activities were informative and fun. Excellent set-up with wonderful resources”

The PGA of Alberta’s Annual General Meeting will take place at 8:00am on March 4th, 2013 at the Carriage House Inn. Information on the AGM has been mailed to all Members, including mail-in ballots for both the Board of Directors and the Assistants’ Board. The Education Committee is excited to announce Chuck Cook as one of the presenters at the 2013 PGA of Alberta Spring Seminar on March 4th & 5th in Calgary, AB. Chuck Cook was an anonymous young teacher when he asked Ben Hogan if he could watch him hit practice balls on a range in Texas in 1980. Cook waited until Hogan finished, gathered his courage and asked the famously taciturn legend if there was anything he lived by. He told me it came down to 10 two-letter words: “If it is to be, it is up to me” - I never forgot that, says Cook. Cook started out as a range assistant in the earliest incarnation of the Golf Digest Schools, helping such teachers as Davis Love Jr., Bob Toski and Jim Flick. Within two years, Cook had worked his way up to an instructor's position at the Schools, giving momentum to a career that includes teaching five major-championship winners—Tom Kite, Corey Pavin, Payne Stewart, Bill Rogers and Mark Brooks.

As we look to provide additional opportunities for all Members, prospective Members and industry partners to connect with one another during the off season, the Association has organized a series of Roundtable Discussions to be held at various locations throughout the province.

The PGA of Alberta handed out the hardware on October 17th naming its annual award winners in various categories from Junior Leader of the Year to Club Professional of the Year.

New programming developed by PHE Canada in partnership with Golf Canada and the PGA of Canada to introduce high school students to golf as part of physical education curriculum. The introduction of the high school program builds on the success of the Golf in Schools Elementary School Program which is currently in close to 1,800 schools since the program launched in 2009. With 4,600 high schools and nearly 10,000 elementary schools across Canada, the program has the opportunity to introduce the sport of golf to nearly 4.5 million students.

Dean Ingalls and Mark Corrigan (Pinebrook G&CC) shot 10-under today for a two day total of 17-under to beat the Glendale G&CC team of Greg McGarry and Blair Buttar who put together a two day total of 16-under. Coming in tied for third was the Riverview GC (Trevor Ellerman and Derek Berger) and Lynx Ridge GC (Tim Sawatzky and Nathan Pruden) who shot 15-under.

Robb James and Mike Belbin of the Royal Mayfair GC and Rob McLeay and Garett Jenkinson of the Riverside GA both shot an impressive 10 –under to take a one shot lead over Greg McGarry and Blair Buttar of the Glendale G&CC who shot 9-under.

Heading into the final round of the PGA of Canada Assistants' Championship, Alberta's Mike Belbin (Royal Mayfair) holds a 3 shot lead over four players including Riverside's Gary Hartford.

Mike Belbin (Royal Mayfair GC) shot an impressive 6-under 65 today to capture the Blackhawk GC competitive course record and to win the 2012 Fletcher Tour Championship with a total of 137. Shooting 1-under 70 today was Brett Burgeson (Country Hills GC) who finished alone in second with a two day total of 141 and Jamie Kureluk (GolfTEC) shot a 3-under round of 68 to finish with a total of 142.

Gord Courage (CC of The Hamptons) was the lone player under par Tuesday shooting a 2-under 69 at the 2012 Fletcher Tour Championship being hosted by the Blackhawk GC. National Golf Academy @ McCall Lake team, Darryl James and Steve Price, shot an impressive net score of 9-under 63 today at the Golf Trends/Flightscope Pro Senior at the Olds Central Highlands GC. Coming in tied for second was the National Golf Academy Dome team of Dan Cameron and Martin Paull and the Nanton GC team of Mike Fahey and Gord Burrows who shot a net team score of 8 – under 64.

Quinn Powell (Inglewood G&CC) beat out Jason Haley (Golf Canada Centre) in a 3-hole playoff today after shooting a 1-under 70 to win the Golf Supply House Professional Series at the Inglewood G&CC. Gord Newis (Glencoe G&CC) and Jimmy Saran (Paradise Canyon GR) came tied for 3rd after shooting an even par of 71.

Barb as the former owner of Oakcreek Developments was a long time supporter of the PGA of Alberta and a close personal friend to many Pros and their families. Barb passed away peacefully at her home in Victoria B.C. Barb is survived by her brother Ian and step-mother Joyce Elliott. At Barb's request no funeral service was held.

“It was a dogfight all the way around,” said Calgary’s Scott Allred, who won the two-day Alberta PING Canada Club Professional Championship at the Glendale Golf & Country Club by two shots over Blackhawk’s Craig McArthur.

The Glendale G&CC played host to 55 of the top Club Professionals in Alberta this week, and the scores posted over the two day 36-hole competition were very impressive. Scott Allred posted scores of 65-72 to fend off his nearest competitor, Craig McArthur in an event that saw many red numbers.

Scott Allred leads the 2012 PGA of Alberta Club Pro Championship after a bogey free 65, but the Glendale witnessed other highlights including Craig McArthur's opening 29 and Gary Ward's closing five birdies...

After an opening round 74, Darryl James shot 69 in the 2nd and final round of the PGA of Alberta Senior Championship to force a playoff with Round One Leader Scott Allred (70-73). James prevailed on the first extra hole after rolling in a 3 footer for birdie moments after Allred's 12 footer finished on the lip of the cup.

2011 PGA of Alberta Senior Champion Scott Allred shot 2 under par 70 to lead a field of 35 Professionals at the PGA of Alberta Senior Championship being played at Priddis Greens G&CC. Host Professional Ron Laugher and Paul Horton are two shots behind after their even par 72 opening rounds.

The draw has been posted for rounds one and two of the fourth P.A.T. of 2012. This attempt will be taking place on Tuesday, July 31 & Wednesday, August 1st at The Ranch GC.

Doug Repp & Jon Fry (Fox Hollow GC), Landon Sjogren & Mike Fahey (Nanton GC) & Tim Sawatzky (Lynx Ridge GC) won their respective divisions at the Callaway Golf Pro Junior held at the Henderson Lake GC in Lethbridge

Having started the day at 6 a.m. Gillett and his group spent the day on the Drayton Valley GC trying to make their way through as many rounds as possible. Battling fatigue, dehydration and extreme temperatures, they battled on and by the time the wrapped the day up at dusk they had played 13 rounds.

Jeff Cuthbertson knows the layout at the Cougar Creek Golf Course all too well and this may have helped him shoot 69 and win the Golf Supply House Series Event in a playoff with Ed Boni from The Ranch

The resort style golf course opens nine holes to the public today. Eventually, the golf course will be 27 holes. The second nine will open in 2014; then the third nine will take shape.

Finishing tied for third at 1-under 143 were Gord Courage, CC of the Hamptons and Tim Sawatzky, Lynx Ridge GC.

The 2012 Callaway Pro Junior South will be hosted by the Henderson Lake GC on Tuesday, July 17th. This event will start with lunch at 11:30 followed by a 1:30 shotgun.

The Highwood G&CC in High River will host the Golf Supply House Professional Series event on Monday, June 25th. The addition of Highwood to the tournament schedule means all of the venues have now been set for the 2012 PGA of Alberta tournament season. Head Professional Dean Sklarenko and Apprentice Chris DiPasquale of the Picture Butte GC combined for a best-ball score of 7-under 64 to win the 2011 G&G Golf Company Pro-Pro Best Ball today at The Ranch GC. Blair Buttar and Greg McGarry of the Glendale G&CC finished one shot behind after a 6-under 65, while three other teams finished in a tie for third at 5-under for the event.

On Saturday September 10th Peter David Cushner passed away at the age of 60. He is survived by his wife Cheryl and 3 children, Nicole, Natalie and Ryan. Peter had been a member of the Canadian Tour in the early 70,s before working as an Assistant Professional at the Derrick Golf Club (Edmonton) & the Broadmoor Golf Club (Sherwood Park). He went on to spend 25 years as the Head Professional at the Lloydminster Golf Club. Among his many tournament victories Peter was an Alberta & Saskatchewan PGA Champion along with a Saskatchewan Senior PGA Championship. His sportsmanship and exemplary play moved the PGA of Saskatchewan to name there order of merit the "Peter Cushner Award". He was a Board member and a Past President of the PGA of Saskatchewan. His service was held on Saturday September 17th In Edmonton and was attended by family, friends along with a number of brother Golf Professionals.

Keith Whitecotton of the Edmonton Petroleum G&CC will defend his 2010 Match Play Championship in this year's final against Dave Henzie of the Calgary Elks Lodge GC on Friday, September 16th at the Red Deer G&CC. Scott Allred of the Elbow Springs GC followed up his first-round 72 with an even-par 71 in the final round to take home his first PGA of Alberta Senior Championship today at the Windermere G&CC. Allred defeated two-time defending champion Gord Courage of the CC of the Hamptons by four shots after Courage shot the low round of the event, a 3-under 68. Darrell McDonald of the Mill Woods GC finished alone in third place five shots behind Allred, while Burt Drysdale, a PGA of Alberta Life Member, won the Super Senior title for players aged 60 or over.

Mike Belbin of the Royal Mayfair GC won his second straight Golf Supply House Assistants' Championship today at the Stony Plain GC. Belbin added a 1-under par 71 to his first-round 66 for a three-shot victory over Darryl James of the National Golf Academy at McCall Lake. Belbin made eagle on the par-4 17th after two consecutive bogeys on 15 and 16 to finally distance himself from James after a hard-fought battle throughout the back nine. Jamie Gerlitz of the Lacombe G&CC finished alone in third place at 3-under for the tournament.

On Tuesday, June 21st, four CPGA Golf Professionals from the Windermere Golf & Country Club made the best of the summer solstice by holding their 2nd Annual Longest Day of Golf charity fundraiser. Brett Burgeson of the Country Hills GC had the day's best round, a 5-under 67, to finish in second place, while Host Professional Scott Allred finished alone in third after a pair of 2-under par 70's.

Darryl James of the National Golf Academy of McCall Lake shot a 4-under par 68 today at the Elbow Springs GC to take a one-shot lead over two players after the first round of this week's PGA of Alberta Players' Tour event. Trailing James by one are Mark Corrigan of the Pinebrook G&CC and Dale Miners of the Priddis Greens G&CC after three-under 69's. 19 players in the field are within 5 shots of the lead going into the final round tomorrow.

Several Edmonton-and-area Professional recently participated in a National Golf in Schools program awareness day. The event was covered by Curtis Stock of the Edmonton Journal. "It's not just golf. That's the neat part," says Adam Werbicki of The Derrick Golf & Winter Club. "It brings back the rush of why we really play the game. For the fun of it."

The May 16th Callaway Professional Series event scheduled for Kananaskis Country GC has been cancelled as the golf course will not be open by the tournament date. A new venue and date will be found for this event and those currently signed up will have first right of refusal for their spot.

The draw has been posted for the 2011 PGA of Alberta Match Play Championship. This year's brackets are a tribute to the Association's history, highlighting four great players and golf professionals. Round 1 must be completed no later than Monday, May 23rd.

Bill Quilley, a Life Member of the CPGA, passed away Wednesday April 27 in Edmonton at age 77 after battling prostate cancer. Details of a service to be held at the Highlands G&CC are attached.

Please be advised that the location for the 1st Professional Series event of 2011 has changed from the Medicine Hat G&CC to the Connaught GC. At this point, tee times will remain the same as an 11:30am start.

The PGA Championship of Canada will make a return to the national tournament schedule this season, and Cottonwood G&CC in DeWinton will play host from June 14th - 18th. The tournament will be conducted as a match play championship between the highest-ranked 64 players from the Canadian PGA Player Rankings.

Brett Burgeson (Country Hills GC), Mike Belbin (Royal Mayfair G&CC), and Darryl James (National Golf Academy) ranked in the top 15 on the CPGA National Player Rankings. Other PGA of Alberta Members in the top 100 Player Rankings include; Chris Toth (Riverside GC), Blair Buttar (Glendale G&CC), Scott Allred (Elbow Springs GC), and Todd Fiske (River Bend GC).

Following the success of the Edmonton Golf Show two weeks ago, this past weekend's Calgary Golf Show also marked a huge success with approximately 4,500 Calgary-and-area golfers walking through the door to see what the coming season has to offer. Those consumers also contributed to record-setting Clearance Centre numbers, which surpassed $150,000 for the first time in the history of the Shows.

The team of Jamie Kureluk, Mike Belbin, Blair Buttar and Chris Toth successfully defended Alberta's team title yesterday at the CPGA Assistants' Championship at Gorge Vale in Victoria, BC. Alberta won by ten shots over the team from Ontario.

The team of the National Golf Academy at McCall Lake (Terry Carter & Darryl James) eagled the first playoff hole to win the 2010 Callaway Golf Pro-Assistant, coming from 4 shots back on Day 2. Finishing in second place was the team from Glendale G&CC (Greg McGarry & Kevin Chow).

The team from Glendale G&CC (Greg McGarry & Kevin Chow) combined for an 11-under par score today at Heritage Pointe GC to take a one-shot lead after the first round of this year's Callaway Golf Pro-Assistant. Greg McGarry of the Glendale G&CC finished three shots back and will join Stanier as the first two players to solidify their spots on Team Alberta at the 2010 Canadian Club Professional Championship in Port St. Lucie, FL.

Mike Belbin of the Royal Mayfair GC came from four shots back today at Inglewood G&CC to become the 2010 Golf Supply House PGA of Alberta Assistants' Champion for the second time in three years. Belbin added a 4-under 67 to his 5-under 66 from Round 1 to pass Jamie Kureluk of Cottonwood G&CC and take home a two-shot win. Kureluk finished the day in second place, while Troy Prusky finished alone in third place at 3-under.

The Lakeside Players' Tour event scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, July 12th and 13th has been postponed due to weather. The event has been re-scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, September 7th. Players in the event should confirm their attendance with the office, or withdraw from the event online or by fax.

Brack Little shot a 1-under 70 and then birdied the first playoff hole today at his home course at The Ranch GC to capture the seventh Callaway Professional Series event of the season. Shaun Luopa of the Red Deer G&CC, a winner last week, and Andre DiBartolo of the Highlands GC finished tied for 3rd after even-par rounds of 71.

Congratulations to Brett Burgeson of the Country Hills GC, who finished 7th at the 2009 Canadian Club Professional Championship held at the PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, FL. Burgeson was one of three players in the field of 104 Head Professionals and Executive Professionals from across the country who shot 3 consecutive rounds under par.

After battling a brain tumour diagnosed in July, Ron Belbin passed away on November 16, 2009 at the age of 63. A Memorial Service has been set for Friday, November 20th at 2pm. The service will be held at the Connelly-Mckinley Millwoods Chapel located at 4820 Meridian St. (Hwy 14/Whitemud).

All four players enter the third and final round with a chance to win their first national Assistants' title, with Belbin and James leading the way at the top of the leaderboard.

Gord Courage of the CC of the Hamptons shot a second straight under-par round today to win the 2009 Bridgestone Senior Championship at Highlands GC. Kevin Day of Billy D's Golf Centre finished alone in second, four shots ahead of PGA of Alberta Life Members Frank Fowler and Wayne Stark, who also shared the Super Senior title for players over 60 years of age.

The 2009 Bridgestone Senior Championship will be played at the Highlands GC on September 15 and 16.

Jamie Kureluk of Cottonwood G&CC shot a 1-under par 70 today at the Wolf Creek Golf Resort to claim the Callaway Golf / Fletcher Players' Tour Championship by three shots. Scott Anderson of the host club, Jeff Cuthbertson of Wolf Creek Golf Resort and first-round leader Brett Burgeson of Country Hills GC finished tied for second.

The 2009 G&G Golf Pro Pro Best Ball will be held on Monday, September 14th at the Mill Woods GC in Edmonton.

Burgeson shot a round of 2-under 69 at the Wolf Creek Golf Resort to take a lead of a single shot over Gord Courage of the CC of the Hamptons, Scott Anderson of the host club, and Blair Buttar of Glendale G&CC. Two other players lurk two shots back at even-par.

The Canyon Meadows duo of Murray Walter and Sharana Basappa combined for a team 61 to win the Wilson Staff - Loft 8 Club Challenge Pro Am at Alberta Springs. Jamie Kureluk shoots 66 to win individual side.

On Wednesday and Thursday, September 9th and 10th, the top 30 players on the Callaway Golf / Fletcher Players' Tour will take to the Links Course at Wolf Creek Golf Resort to determine the 2009 Players' Tour Champion. Tee times have now been posted for Round 1.

Jonny White isn’t a new face at the Canmore Golf Club, but he will be taking on a new role this golf season. White received his CPGA card at the end of last season and he will now be taking a more active role at the golf course. “It was something I have always wanted to do,” said White. “When I was younger I always said I wanted to become a golf professional. And it wasn’t to play on Tour, it was a teaching professional.”
