Wes is Best After Round One

10 September, 2018

Forty-four of Alberta’s top competitors teed off for round one at the newly formed PGA of Alberta Fall Championship hosted at Royal Mayfair GC and proudly sponsored by long-time PGA of Alberta partner, Sunice/Bobby Jones. The weary weather forced players to dress for cold and wet conditions throughout the day with temperatures hovering around 10 degrees. Fortunately the rain held off for the majority of the day giving the players almost ideal playing conditions.

Playing in his tenth event this season and hunting for his third victory is Wes Heffernan (Golf Canada Centre) who started his opening round at the 1:20pm time and finished with a 6-under 64 to give himself a commanding lead and only one off the course record. Wes was able to finish hole 18 with a beautiful 50-foot putt for birdie to increase his lead. Four strokes behind Wes in sole possession of second is Craig McArthur (Blackhawk GC) who finished round one with a score of 2-under 68. Close behind the two leaders in a four-way tie for third place is Riley Fleming (NGA Dome), Stefan Cox (Calgary G&CC), local fan favorite Mike Belbin (Royal Mayfair GC) & Greg McGarry (Glendale G&CC) who finished the first 18 holes with a score of 1-under 69.

Close behind the leaders shooting an even-par round of 70 is Kent Fukushima (Redwood Meadows G&CC), Scott Borsa (Devon GC) & Braden Chown (Desert Blume GC). Round two is set for a competitive day of golf as there is 12 players that are plus one or better that all have the ability to put some pressure on the leaders.

Round two will resume tomorrow morning (Tuesday, September 11th) at 11am. Players will have a chance to improve upon their round one scores as the weather forecast is showing for minimal wind and temperatures reaching a high of 15 degrees.
