River Bend Pros Celebrate Dream Day Taking Both Players Tour Titles at The Ranch

EDMONTON — River Bend Golf and Recreation Area professionals, Logan Hill and Phil McCluskey, put on a dominant performance Monday at The Ranch Golf and Country Club, sweeping both the main and senior divisions at the PGA of Alberta Players Tour 1-Day event.
Hill delivered when it mattered most, sinking a birdie on the final hole to secure a one-shot victory in the main division. The River Bend pro carded a 4-under-par 67, rebounding from a shaky start to finish with rounds of 34-33.
“I hit the ball really well today despite a slow start of bogey, birdie, bogey,” said Hill, who settled into a rhythm, adding five birdies to the card after his rollercoaster start to finish at 67. “I really took advantage of the par 5s and limited my mistakes.”
Hill finished one shot ahead of Nick Vandermey at 3-under-par, while David MacComb, of Royal Mayfair Golf Club, and Weston Gillett, of Lacombe Golf and Country Club, shared third at -2.
Only four other players in the field of 55 managed to post sub-par rounds.
While Hill needed a birdie on the final hole to secure his title, his River Bend colleague McCluskey made his victory in the senior division look considerably more comfortable.
McCluskey fired a 5-under-par 66 to run away with the senior division crown.
“Well, I didn’t start out very well, bogey, double bogey, but made a birdie putt on four, and that turned my game around,” said McCluskey. “I drove the ball really well today, but really I made a bunch of putts, and that was the difference.”
After opening his round 3-over-par through his first two holes, McCluskey caught fire, rattling off eight birdies over his final 14 holes to storm back and finish at 66 (-5).
“Today, to be honest, it was all about Logan. I was watching the leaderboard and was so excited. Today is a dream. Logan is such a great player, he just kept me on a cloud,” added McCluskey.
“He is just such a great player to be around. I’ve learned from him that you’ve got to work hard and be dedicated to getting better. We are opposites in how we approach the game. He’s very technical as a fitter with shaft selection and gear, and I haven’t tied my shoelaces in 30 years. But we both want the same outcome.”
The shared victories was even more meaningful for Hill given the influence McCluskey has had on his development, both as a fellow professional and as a mentor.
“Phil taught me about learning to stay in the moment, and staying patient. It’s really cool to win with him,” added Logan Hill.
Jeff Cuthbertson of Stony Plain Golf Club was the next-best senior finisher at 2-under par.
