Phil McCluskey Birdies Final Hole to Capture PGA of Alberta Seniors’ Division Title
11 May, 2026
HIGH RIVER, Alta. — Phil McCluskey of Riverbend Golf and Recreation Area birdied the final hole Monday to claim the PGA of Alberta Seniors’ Division event at Highwood Golf by one shot.
One of the final players in the 21-man field to enter the clubhouse, McCluskey put the finishing touches on a steady round featuring six birdies and two bogeys to card a 4-under-par 67 on the 6,191-yard layout in cold, blustery and challenging conditions in High River.
“I putted really well today. On the first hole I made a 7 or 8 footer for par and that set the one of the day. Then I made 3 birdies on the front 9, so I played really solid,” said McCluskey after stuffing his final approach shot to five feet.
“I knew I was tied and I wanted to give myself a chance. I hit a really good drive, and had 116 yards left. It was nice to birdie the last hole.”
Bruce Rogerson mounted an incredible comeback to briefly hold the clubhouse lead after opening with a quadruple-bogey 8 on the first hole. The PGA of Alberta member responded in spectacular fashion with five consecutive birdies and, after another bogey on the 10th hole, closed with a hat trick of birdies to finish one-shot back at 68.
While Rogerson was readying himself for extra holes, McCluskey had other ideas, making birdie on the final hole, to move him to 4-under par and secure the title outright.
Jason Stanier of Inglewood Golf and Country Club was the only other player to finish under par. The vice-president of the PGA of Alberta Board of Directors posted a 1-under-par 70.
