PGA of Alberta Invests in Province’s Youth

Two-year partnership brings competitive and career development ops for young Alberta golfers

CALGARY–Aspiring and new golf professionals in Alberta will have greater professional development opportunities on and off the course, thanks to a new partnership struck today with Play Golf Alberta.

The PGA of Alberta’s newly cemented two-year deal with Play Golf Alberta will allow for the Junior Masters to be extended to a three-round competition in 2026 and 2027, also allowing for more World Amateur Golf Ranking points.

“We have heard from our members that it is important to increase the number of rounds played at the Junior Masters to provide a greater competitive experience for the top junior golfers in Alberta and we are thrilled to be able to provide this with the increased support of Play Golf Alberta,” said Robert Rousselle, chief executive officer, PGA of Alberta. “Play Golf Alberta is committed to providing a highly competitive and affordable opportunity for junior golfers to continue developing their game and we are grateful for their support.”

The Play Golf Alberta Junior Masters Tournament is a 36-hole invitational event that has been led over the last 35 years by the PGA of Alberta, featuring the top-40 boys and top-20 girls in Alberta.

Play Golf Alberta also announced it will invest in the continued career development of a young golf professionals by sponsoring the PGA of Alberta Assistants’ Championship and will provide a professional under the age of 25 with a $5,000 scholarship to be used to attend the PGA of America Buying Show in Orlando, Florida.

“Whether it is junior golfers aspiring to one day be a professional themselves, or helping to provide greater career development opportunities for newcomers to the industry, Play Golf Alberta is committed to giving back to this next generation of leaders in the same fashion those professionals have done for us,” said Jeff Sveen, who has been a PGA of Alberta members since 1989.

“I truly believe it is important for us to provide the competitive opportunities for our top juniors to continue to test their game against an elite field, while also mentoring and opening doors for your young professionals who are already emerging as the next leaders of the game in Alberta.”

Play Golf Alberta will be profiled throughout the term of the contract as one of the  PGA of Alberta’s premier partners in its official sponsor pool.

Mentors Needed to Develop the Next Generation

The PGA of Alberta is looking for “Mentors” to help support new (Apprentice Professional) members to the Association.

Developed in conjunction with the Assistants’ Board of Directors, the Mentorship Program provides guidance and direction to new members of the Association (Apprentice Professionals).

The Mentorship Program is designed to pair experienced members who are passionate about their careers, the industry, and the Association with newcomers in an effort to lead them to long and healthy career in the golf industry.

The deadline to enter is November 30, 2025. All pairings will be completed in December.

The PGA of Alberta Assistants’ Board will be presenting 5 webinars from November - March with the intention of providing professional development for all assistants within the industry. This will produce an avenue for networking and relationship building so members can continue to further their careers.
