Are you looking for a way to re-invigorate your junior program? Are you looking for a way to move beyond the typical swing lesson? The Derrick Golf & Winter Club in Edmonton has one one of the most successful junior golf programs in Alberta, led by 2009 PGA of Alberta Junior Leader of the Year Adam Werbicki and Head Professional Trevor Goplin. In their opinion, and the opinion of many of golf’s leading authorities on athletic development, a sport specific skill (in this case, golf) should be based upon a well-developed base of fundamental movement skill and fundamental sport skill.

Using many of the techniques taught in the TPI Junior Golfer courses, The Derrick has managed to incorporate many “non-golf related” activities into their junior program in order to help improve the overall athletic ability of their juniors and their golf games. For example, it is their belief that, in order for someone to play their best golf, they should be good at things like running, hopping, jumping, skipping, etc. in order to improve more “golf-specific” abilities like balance, coordination, and spatial and body awareness. In their golf skills camps, then, The Derrick professionals spend equally as much time on non-golf specific activities such as a baseball or tennis swing requiring a weight transfer similar to golf, as they do on golf-specific abilities such as chipping or putting.
