Sam carded an outstanding 66 with a stellar 32 on the front-9 which was followed up with a great 34 on the back-9.  Sam carded 6 Birdies and had only 1 blemish on the card today. His partner Carol Bell, chipped in with 3 timely net birdies on their march to victory.

Wes Heffernan Victorious at the 100th Playing of the PGA Championship of Canada
PGA of Canada News

Wes Heffernan Victorious at the 100th Playing of the PGA Championship of Canada

On Friday afternoon (June 24th) at Beacon Hall GC, Wes Heffernan put a bow on a dominant performance at the PGA Championship of Canada, going wire-to-wire to cement himself as the winner of the 100th anniversary of the event by a margin of five strokes, shooting scores of 68-69-69-72 to do so.

Full Results and Purse Breakdown can be seen here

“I’m not sure it has sunk in yet. (Friday) was a challenging mental day with the lead and trying to keep that lead, but I played really well, which was very fulfilling,” said Heffernan, who came into the week as the top player on the PGA Player Rankings and takes home $12,000 with the victory. “I didn’t make any mistakes until the end, and I had a nice cushion by that point.”

It didn’t take long for those bearing witness to realize that there would be no coming back to the field for Heffernan on Friday.

Off the tee this week, Heffernan was impeccable. The only thing perhaps more impressive was his ball striking, as he gave himself good birdie look after good birdie look on the firm and fast Beacon Hall greens.

After knocking in a 12-foot birdie putt on the second hole, Heffernan cruised through the front nine with eight consecutive pars, with none of the par putts being further than three feet.

As Heffernan noted, a bogey followed by a double on 16 and 17 put a dent in his lead, but by that point, there was nothing between the 45-year-old and the first P.D. Ross trophy of his career.

“I know the tournament has had quite the history and there’s been some fantastic players at this event. I got to play with Jim Rutledge the past two days, who is a Canadian legend, and he is on the trophy as well,” said Heffernan – who’s five-stroke winning margin came over the runner-up Rutledge. “I was fortunate enough to share these past two rounds with him and I was fortune to come out on top.”

With the victory, Heffernan becomes the third-consecutive Albertan to win the event after Dustin Risdon’s victory in 2019 and Riley Fleming’s win last summer.

“I have a lot of great family and friends to thank back home for their support,” said Heffernan, who teaches out of the Dynamic Motion Golf Performance Center. “Some people thought it was only three rounds, so I actually got some congratulations texts yesterday, so I was happy to be able to get it done today”

While Heffernan turned in a score of 10-under par, only three other players were able to break par for the tournament – Rutledge, Gordon Burns, and Fleming. And while Heffernan broke 70 in three of the four rounds, no other player was able to do it more than twice – and the only player to do that was Fleming.

Wes Heffernan Leads the Way after Second Round of the PGA Championship of Canada

Wes Heffernan Leads the Way after Second Round of the PGA Championship of Canada

Fresh off his RBC Canadian Open exemption, Wes Heffernan, the top ranked player on the PGA Player Rankings, broke 70 for the second consecutive day, firing a 3-under par 69 to put himself two strokes ahead of Jim Rutledge and Gord Burns.

While late in round one players were forced to battle the wind, yesterday it was near unprecedented heat and humidity. Players were reaching for as much BioSteel as they could as the ‘feels like’ reached 40-degrees Celsius at Beacon Hall Golf Club.

“I had to put my rain gloves on because I was sweating so much,” said Heffernan. “I struggled in the middle of the round and had two loose shots, one my hands slipped and the other I just wasn’t mentally feeling comfortable.”

Full leaderboard can be seen here

For the second-consecutive day, Heffernan, who is seeking the first PGA Championship of Canada victory of his career, played the back nine bogey free, once again playing the back side in just 33 strokes.

“I righted the ship to start the back nine, and even though I missed a few short ones that could have made it even better, I hit my lines and played just as solid as yesterday,” said the 2019 PGA Assistants’ Champion of Canada. “I feel like if I play well, I can always be in the mix, so to play solid and be leading is where I want to be and hopefully that’s where I can be the rest of the tournament.”

Other notable performances by PGA of Alberta Professionals so far include:

Final group for round three including Heffernan tees off at 10:40am MST today. Follow the action for the final two rounds on the leaderboard link above.

Wes Heffernan Set to Represent the PGA of Canada This Week at the RBC Canadian Open
PGA of Canada News

Wes Heffernan Set to Represent the PGA of Canada This Week at the RBC Canadian Open

4008 days; that will be the amount of time between Wes Heffernan’s final putt on Sunday at the 2011 US Open - his last tournament on the world’s biggest stage – to this Thursday, when he will strike his opening tee shot at the RBC Canadian Open.

Much like the #1 song on the Billboard Chart when he played his last PGA TOUR event, the Calgarian hopes to be ‘Rolling in the Deep’ this week at St. George’s Golf & Country Club in Toronto. We should specify; deep under-par, and not buried in the devastatingly deep rough players are set to face this week.

While many things have changed since June of 2011, a few things have remained the same: Heffernan’s silky-smooth swing and ever-steady composure. If he can settle in quickly, he will feel right at home.

“The hard part is going to be getting into that comfort level again, not just playing a tournament, but a PGA TOUR tournament, you can’t replicate that anywhere,” says Heffernan, who finished just one point ahead of fellow Calgarian Riley Fleming to earn the exemption. “It’s not the game that will be an issue, it’s getting into the right headspace as quickly as I can.

“You can hit 50 perfect shots on the range, but nothing will feel like that first tee shot on Thursday,” he added.

The PGA of Canada Points Ranking is based off the past three years of competition in PGA of Canada National Championships and select Zone events (2020 events did not count because of all National events being cancelled due to COVID-19). In that time, Heffernan has won two events and placed within the top-10 in 11 of the 12 tournaments.

Prior to this week, Heffernan says he has played this golf course one time – 22-years ago – “that isn’t going to help me much,” he says with a laugh.

However, following his arrival this past weekend, Heffernan joined old friend David Hearn for a round and has played 27 more holes at St. George’s over the past few days to get prepared. The course, he says, couldn’t be better.

“I can’t recall a golf course in better condition than this course, the fairways are some of the best ever,” says Heffernan. “Before this week I had only played six rounds this year, but we have a facility and it’s not like I haven’t been hitting golf balls the past six months. I’m just trying to get the short game in shape as quickly as possible.”

Heffernan is set to begin his opening round at 12:12pm MST on Thursday, with his second round following on Friday at 7:12am MST.

Fox Features in the Winners’ Circle at GSH Series #3 at Highwood Golf

Today’s tournament saw fifty-five players head south to High River to compete in the third Golf Supply House Series of the season. The weather started off a bit cooler in the morning, however, warmed up nicely throughout the day giving players excellent playing conditions by mid afternoon with the course in great shape.

Winning his first event of the season was: Mitch Fox (Speargrass GC). Mitch’s superb round included 8 birdies on the card with only 2 bogey blemishes to show.  Mitch carded  6-under 65 to win by one stroke. Mitch carded a great 34 on the front-9 and a scorching 31 on the back-9 today.

Putting some pressure on Mitch today and finishing in solo second place was none other than: Albert Pistorius (Country Hills GC). Albert carded a great round today which included five birdies and was blemish free. Albert has finished in Second at both GSH events he has played this season and will look to take home the next one.

Rounding out our Top-3, both carding a 2-under 69, was the likes of: Weston Gillett (Lacombe G&CC) and Kyle Wade (PGA of AB Member). Weston and Kyle both had 3 Birdies and only 1 bogey on the cards today.

Rounding out our Top-5, in a three way tie for 5th was: Dillion Batsel (Desert Blume GC), Shawn Proulx (River Ridge G&CC) and Jace Ouellette (Innisfail GC) who all carded solid 1-under 70’s.
