Wilmot in the Lead after Round 1 at PING Club Pro Championship
It was a beautiful day for Round 1 of the annual PING Club Pro Championship hosted this year at the serene Hampton’s GC in north-west Calgary. Conditions were excellent all day on a challenging course and it is in mint shape for our players.
In First place, coming out firing today in his first event of the season was: Pat Wilmot (Earl Grey GC) who carded a great 1-under par 71 with a 35 on the front 9 and 36 on the back 9. Pat had 5 Birdies on the card today.
In in a 2-way tie for 2nd is: last week’s Pro-Senior Champion, Todd Halpen (Golfuture YYC) & Dallas Cantera (Cardiff G&CC) who both shot solid even-par 72’s today. Todd shot a 35-37 and had 5 Birdies on the card. Dallas also shot 35-37 and also had 5 Birdies on the card.
In sole possession of 4th was: Jeremy Maher (Modern Golf) who carded a respectable +1-over par 73 with 4 Birdies. Rounding out our Top-5 today was: Samuel Kirkness (Inglewood G&CC) who carded a respectable +2-over par 74 today with 3 Birdies and 1 Eagle on the card.
Round 2 will resume early tomorrow morning (July 27th) at 8am. Final group of: Cantera, Halpen and Wilmot tee it up at 10:00am sharp tomorrow!

Halpen Hauls in Ping Canada Club Pro Championship at Hamptons GC
Players were treated to wonderful day at the PING Canada Club Pro Championship hosted at the prestigious Hamptons GC. The course & elements provided an excellent challenge for players throughout the two days as they battled to keep scores low as possible.
It was an incredibly exciting day as the Leaderboard tightened up throughout the back-9 for our final few groups and ended up requiring a 2-Hole playoff to determine our 2021 Ping Canada Club Professional Champion. Todd Halpen (Golfuture YYC) and Darryl James ((National Golf Academy at Shaganappi) featured in our playoff and we had a near miss from Darryl on #1 for a Birdie to end it right there. Todd and Darryl then both had Birdie looks on #2 and Todd was able to drain his approximate 6-foot putt for the victory!
Our 2021 Club Pro Champion is: Todd Halpen (Golfuture YYC) who followed up last week’s Pro-Senior victory with the Club Pro this week. Todd battled all day on a challenging course and had some ups and downs but, did enough to come from behind and force a playoff. Todd shot 37’s on the front and back today to card a 74 and finish with a Championship two-day total of: 146.
In sole possession of Second place was: Darryl James (National Golf Academy at Shaganappi) who put together two solid rounds and also managed to come from behind today and force the playoff. Darryl shot a 35 on the front-9 and followed up with a 36 on the back for a Round 2 score of 1-under par 71. Darryl finished with a Championship two-day total of: 146.
In a two-way tie for Third place, after both finishing with two-day championship totals of: 147, was: Pat Wilmot (Earl Grey GC) & Jeremy Maher (Modern Golf). Pat battled all day and finished the tournament at a very respectable +3 score. Jeremy played two consistent rounds and also finished at a +3 score overall.
In a three-way tie for Fifth place, all with two-day Championship totals of: 149, was: Adam Bruce (Leduc GC), Phil McCluskey (Riverbend G&RA) & Samuel Hart (Bearspaw GC).
In sole possession of Eighth place was: Host Professional, Gord Courage (Hamptons GC) who finished with a two-day Championship total of: 150.
Rounding out our Top-10 today, in a three-way tie for Ninth place, was: Jeff Cuthbertson (Stony Plain GC), Kevin Day (Billy D’s GC) & Samuel Kirkness (Inglewood G&CC) who all finished with two-day Championship totals of: 151.

Junior Scholarship Program - Final Week to Apply for $1,000 Scholarship
One of the main focuses of the PGA of Alberta has been supporting Junior Golf. Alberta Golf Professionals use their expertise to create, organize and facilitate junior-oriented events including the PGA of Alberta Junior Masters. The Scholarship Program is another important step in the overall development of our current programming.
The mission of the PGA of Alberta is to provide junior golfers from around the province the opportunity to be recognized for their outstanding achievements, while promoting and providing access to continued education. This program has presented over 50 scholarships since 1998.
Scholarships
There are four (4) Junior Scholarships available of $1,000 each awarded to deserving candidates. Two of these scholarships will be awarded to children of PGA of Alberta Members (no golf experience needed) and the other two will be awarded to Alberta Junior boys or girls, who meet the criteria.
Deadline
Scholarship deadline is this Friday, July 30th, 2021 by 4pm. Application forms and accompanying information must be sent to the PGA of Alberta office no later than this date.
As of July 23rd, the current leader in the standings of the Top 100 Program presented Foresight Sports Canadais Board Member Josh Fleming of GOLFTEC Calgary Beacon Heights. Josh has finished in fourth place in each of the last two years of the Top 100 program so let’s see if he can maintain his lead down the final stretch to win the award for the first time.
The program year officially ends on September 30th so there’s still lots of time left to earn points and move up in the rankings. The winner of the Top 100 Program will be recognized at the annual Awards Banquet in Calgary on October 20th. The current Top 10 in the standings are:

Halpen Hoists GolfTrends Inc Pro-Senior with Partner Newton at Turner Valley GC
Yesterday saw the second Pro-Am of the season hosted at the beautiful & pristine Turner Valley GC, sponsored by Golf Trends INC and was hugely successful. We had a massive field of 58 teams for a total of 116 competitors! The course was in outstanding shape and all the teams had an incredible experience at such a top-notch facility.
This year saw the event continue with the Team Net Stableford scoring format which kept things fun and exciting for the competition. The point allocation in this format is: 6 points for a Hole-in-One, 5 points for a Double-Eagle, 4 points for Eagle, 3 points for Birdie, 2 points for Par & 1 point for Bogey.
Our Champions were the team of: Todd Halpen (Golfuture YYC) & his partner Keith Newton who played an exceptional round to finish with 44 team points and won by retrogression! Todd carded an excellent score of 69,going 35 on the front-9 and following it up with a 34 on the back-9. Todd had 3 Birdies and 1 Eagle along the way. His partner, Keith Newton, carded a stellar 73 and chipped in with 4 timely birdies on their march to the Winners Circle.
In Second Place through retrogression was the team of: Chris Cooke (Silvertip GR) & Rick Guinn who also accumulated a superb 44 points today. Chris had a Birdie and an Eagle while Rick had an outstanding 6 Birdies on the card.
Finishing in Third through retrogression, also at 44 points was the team of: Jason Stanier (Inglewood G&CC) & Jim Saunders. Jason had a great 5 Birdies on the card and Jim pitched in with 3 timely Birdies of his own.
In solo Fourth, and finishing with a stellar 42 points was the team of: Matthew Mah (Cardiff G&CC) & Peter Blandy. Matt had 4 Birdies on the card and Peter chipped in with 4 Birdies of his own.
Rounding out our Top-5, also through retrogression and finishing with 41 points was the team of: Stefan Cox (Calgary G&CC) & Paul O’Donoghue. Stefan carded an excellent 67 with 5 Birdies on the card.

Whitecotton Waltzes in to Winners Circle at G.S.H. Cardiff G&CC
Today saw the Round Two of the Golf Supply House Series event hosted at Cardiff G&CC. Our Leader after Round 1, Keith Whitecotton (The Quarry) started the day with a healthy lead over his nearest competitors. After carding a solid Front-9 score of 34 and 3 birdies over the first 11 holes, Keith was able to cruise in to the Clubhouse with a commanding 5-stroke lead.
Our Champion: Keith Whitecotton (The Quarry) followed up his incredible opening round of 8-under par (64) from yesterday with another solid Round of: 2-under par 70 to finish the tournament with a two-day total of 135. Keith dropped 4 Birdies today and finished with a 5-stroke lead over his nearest competitors.
In Second Place was: Brady Karlson (Canyon Meadows G&CC) who carded our lowest Round 2 score today, carding an excellent 6-under par 66 with 5 Birdies and 1 Eagle on the card & finished the tournament at 5-under par with a two-day total 139.
In a two-way tie for Third was: Kent Fukushima (Redwood Meadows G&CC) and one of our host professionals, Matthew Mah (Cardiff G&CC) who both finished the tournament with two-day totals of 141. Matt had an awesome 7 Birdies on the card today and finished today at 3-under par 69 and Kent finished with a respectable 1-over par 73.
Rounding out our Top-5 today, in sole possession of 5th was: Dillion Batsel (Desert Blume GC) who finished the tournament at -1 with a two-day total of 142.
In Sixth was: Larry Petryk (Larry Petryk Golf Academy) who carded a solid 1-under par 71 today with 4 Birdies on the card. Larry finished the tournament at -1 with a two-day total of 143.
In Seventh was: Tyler Lebouthillier (GOLFTEC Calgary Beacon Heights) who finished the tournament at +1 for a two-day total of 145.

PGA Head Professional Championship of Canada headed to Lookout Point CC in October
The PGA Head Professional Championship of Canada has a date finalized on Canadian soil, as the PGA of Canada looks forward to hosting the top Head Professionals, Executive Professionals, Head Teaching Professionals and Master Professionals in the country at Lookout Point CC in Fonthill, Ontario.

Cox Captures Pro-Lady South with Partner Strother
Today saw the first Pro-Am of the season hosted at the stunning Stewart Creek G&CC, sponsored by Jancor Agencies & EFW Radiology and was hugely successful. The course was in outstanding shape and all the teams had an incredible experience at such a top-notch facility nestled in the Rockies.
This year saw the event continue with the Team Net Stableford scoring format which kept things fun and exciting for the competition. The point allocation in this format is 4 points for Eagle, 3 points for Birdie, 2 points for Par & 1 point for Bogey.
Our Champions were the team of: Stefan Cox (Calgary G&CC) & his partner Sue Sthrother who played an exceptional round to finish with 46 team points to win by 1! Stefan carded an outstanding Course Record of 63 (previous record of 64) with a respectable 34 on the front-9 which was followed up with a ridiculous 29 on the back-9. Stefan carded 7 Birdies and 1 Eagle along the way. His partner Sue chipped in with 2 timely net birdies on their march to victory.
In Second Place through retrogression for the 2nd year running ,was the team of: Dale Tomlinson (The Winston GC) & Stephanie Bird who accumulated a superb 45 points today.
Finishing in Third through retrogression also at 45 points was the team of: Glen DesRoche (Picture Butte GC) & Tanya Bezooyen.
In Fourth, also through retrogression and finishing with 44 points was the team of: Dustin Risdon (Dustin Risdon School of Golf) & Sandy Deeg.

Heffernan Back in Winners Circle with GSH Series Win
After a perfect day of weather at The Links at Spruce Grove, Wes Heffernan of Dynamic Motion Golf Performance Centre moves back to the winners circle after a stellar performance today at the third Golf Supply House Series of the season.
In typical Heffernan fashion, Wes played a bogey-free round today which included 5 birdies and 1 eagle to finish at 7-under 65 and win the tournament by a convincing three strokes. This marks the first win of the season for Wes after winning two PGA of Alberta events last year.
Finishing in second place was the likes of Kasey Timms (Royal Mayfair GC) and Mitchell Fox (Speargrass GC) after both shooting excellent rounds of 4-under 68.
Falling one back of Timms and Fox was Jeff Cuthbertson (Stony Plain GC) taking fourth place with a 3-under 69. Rounding out the top five was another solid tournament player Kevin Black (Redwood Meadows G&CC) shooting a solid 2-under 70.
Since there were no skins winners today at the event, the skins money has been added to the purse and distributed accordingly based on payout percentages. Congratulations to all players that earned a cheque.

Staff Update - The PGA of Alberta Welcomes Brendan Ethier
The PGA of Alberta is pleased to introduce Brendan Ethier as the newest member to the Zone staff in the position of Tournament & Education Coordinator. Brendan’s role will consist of coordinating the Education portfolio from the Spring Seminar to the Podcast Series as well as being present at PGA of Alberta tournaments this season. Many Assistant Professionals already had the chance to meet Brendan earlier this week at the Assistants’ Championship at Sirocco GC.
Brendan graduated from the University of Jamestown in North Dakota with a degree in Exercise Science. He has a strong passion for sports and is looking forward to meeting more of the membership at upcoming events. Brendan can now be reached by email at [email protected].

Each year the PGA of Alberta recognizes several Members and Industry Representatives for their achievements throughout the season and their career, as well as for their contributions to the Association and the game of golf. We encourage all Members and industry affiliates to become a part of our Awards Program by nominating an individual or facility that you feel is deserving of an Award.
In total, nine Awards are up for nomination which include the following:

The importance of the Awards Program, on both a Provincial and National scale, is something the Association does not take lightly. Under the guidance of the Awards Committee, the program has evolved over the years and we believe that by placing a strong focus on the Nomination Process, it will ensure that as many deserving individuals as possible are being recognized. In the past 20 years we have had the honour as an Association of recognizing 31 Provincial winners go on to win at a National level, 10 of which were Murray Tucker Club Professional of the Year recipients!
Please note the following points for the 2021 Awards Program;
Top 100 Points - Every member that submits a nomination form BEFORE August 4th will receive 2 Top 100 points for this program year. The maximum points you can receive is 2 total, even if you nominate more than one person.
Video Bio - All members who are nominated for an Award will have the option to submit a short video bio in addition to their application form.
Nomination(s) – We encourage all PGA of Alberta Professionals and industry affiliates to nominate a deserving individual in each of the Award categories. Self-nominations are not permitted.
Awards Banquet - The 2021 PGA of Alberta Awards Banquet will reveal this year’s recipients on Wednesday, Oct. 20 at the Calgary BMO Centre (after the second day of the Buying Show).

Teacher of the Year Nominees must have achieved certified status in at least one context within the instruction stream of the National Coaching Certification Program for Golf in Canada (Instructor of Beginner Golfers, Instructor of Intermediate Golfers, Instructor of Advanced Golfers).

Today saw Round 2 of the Assistants’ Championship sponsored by Cobra Puma Golf at the idyllic Sirocco GC. The course continued to be in fantastic shape and we had a very tight day at the top of the Leaderboard with a major seesaw battle to place in our Top 10. Our defending Champion Riley Fleming and Grant Numrich found themselves all square at 9-under par after 36 holes so a sudden death playoff ensued which started on hole #1.
After a tough battle all day, some serious grinding and aforementioned playoff, our 4X defending Champion is: Mr. Riley Fleming (Lynx Ridge GC) who battled all day to maintain his lead and managed to bring it back from sitting 2-strokes down on our Leaders at one point today. Riley had 1 Eagle and 3 birdies on the card today and made an extremely timely Birdie on the 17th hole. Riley managed to 2-putt from just off the green on the first playoff hole to be victorious with a par.
In sole possession of 2nd is: Grant Numrich (Red Deer G&CC) who carded an unreal 7-under par 65 today and was battling at the top of our Leaderboard all day. Grant had an excellent 7 Birdies on the card today and forced a playoff. Grant finished the tournament with a 2-day total of -9.
In sole possession of 3rd is: Wes Heffernan (Dynamic Motion Golf Performance Centre) who carded an excellent 5-under par 67 today with 1 Eagle and 4 Birdies on the card. Wes finished the tournament with a 2-day total of -8.
Rounding out our Top-5, in a two-way tie for 4th is: Home Course Professional Craig Gibson (Sirocco GC) and Dillion Batsel (Desert Blume GC) who both finished the tournament with a 2-day total of -5. Craig carded a 4-under par 68 today and Dillion carded 2-under par 70.
In a three-way tie for 6th is: Matthew Mah (Cardiff G&CC), Stefan Cox (Calgary G&CC) and Mitchell Fox (Speargrass GC) who all finished the tournament with a 2-day total -4.
Rounding out our Top-10 for the tournament, in a two-way tie for 9th is: Nick Vandermey (Windermere G&CC) & Scott Stiles (Earl Grey GC) who both finished the tournament with a 2-day total of -3.

Riley Not Ready To Relinquish Assistants’ Championship
Today saw Round 1 of the Assistants’ Championship sponsored by Cobra Puma Golf at the scenic Sirocco GC. The course is in fantastic shape and helped inspire some low scores on the Leaderboard today which made for an exciting day for all.
Picking right back up where he left off last year and our 3X defending Champion is: Riley Fleming (Lynx Ridge GC) who carded an exceptional 8-under par 64 today whilst keeping his scorecard blemish free with an impressive 8 birdies on the day. Riley carded a 33 on the front-9 and 31 on the back-9.
In a two-way tie for 2nd place is: Mitchell Fox (Speargrass GC) and Scott Stiles (Earl Grey GC) who both carded stellar 5-under par 67’s today. Mitchell carded 31 on the front-9 and 36 on the back-9 & Scott carded 33 on front and 34 on the back.
Rounding out our Top-5 today in a three-way tie for 4th is: Eric Locke (Priddis G&CC), Wes Heffernan (Dynamic Motion Golf Performance Centre) & Dillion Batsel (Desert Blume GC) who all carded stellar 3-under par 69’s respectively to remain within reach of our Leader with low rounds needed tomorrow.
In a 6-way tie for 7th and rounding out our Top-10 today is: Matthew Mah (Cardiff G&CC), Nick Vandermey (Windermere G&CC), Stefan Cox (Calgary G&CC), Mike Belbin (Royal Mayfair GC), Grant Numrich (Red Deer G&CC) & Graeme Nelson (The Derrick G&WC) who all carded great rounds of 2-under par 70’s.
