Born on June 11, 1956 in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Paul Lowe joined the PGA of Canada in 1978 starting his career in golf at the Bridgewater G&CC in Fort Erie, Ontario where he worked for seven seasons. Once achieving his Class ‘A’ status, Paul moved to Henderson Lake Golf Club under the guidance of Jim McLaughlin before accepting his first Head Professional position at the Hillcrest Sports Centre in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan in 1986. A number of moves across Western Canada within a year and a half brought him back to Henderson Lake to accept the Head Professional position where he remained for 28 years. It wasn’t long after this move that he began to stand out as a leader in the golf industry. Considered by his peers as a mentor in junior golf, retail, customer service, teaching and playing, Mr. Lowe has inspired many golf professionals to be the best version of themselves both on and off the course. He can be quoted by many saying, “treat the person off the street with the same quality you would give your best member”.
Under the mentorship of Jim McLaughlin, Paul learned the ‘Junior-Junior Program’ from the son of Jack McLaughlin, the very person that introduced it to the PGA of Canada and learned the importance of strong Junior Programs. With this guidance combined with his passion and commitment to junior development made his program one of the best in Southern Alberta at the time. This program that was held out of Henderson Lake provided an introduction to the game and stimulated the interest of golf to juniors in Lethbridge and the surrounding area. As soon a junior became a member at the Henderson Lake, they were automatically enrolled in this program with no extra charge for instruction. With two other Golf Professionals, Paul went on to implement a Junior Super League which included ten clubs in the Southern Alberta area including Medicine Hat, Lethbridge, Calgary and High River. Above the instruction that he provided, Paul made it his goal to start the Henderson Lake GC Junior Scholarship Program. To date, approximately $90,000 has been raised for the Scholarship Program. His innovative junior development ideas were recognized by the PGA of Alberta in 1998 & 2006 when he won Junior Leader of the Year. He was nominated three more times in this category and once for Club Professional of the Year in 2014.
Mike Mezei, writer for SCOREGolf and past PGA Tour Canada winner, and Dunc Mills, Executive Director of the McLennan Ross Junior Golf Tour both commended Paul for outstanding dedication to both Henderson Lake and junior golf in Canada in their 2014 articles.
In a further effort to develop Golf Professionals in Alberta, Paul, Brian Huculak, the current Executive Professional at the Lethbridge CC and the Director of Lethbridge College at the time introduced the PGA Golf Management Program to the College. The three were instrumental in building the noteworthy program which many PGA of Canada golf professionals were enrolled in.
Receiving the Life Professional designation in 2015, Paul remains to be active in the Association and continues to be a role model to many members. He takes great care of the ones in whom he sees great potential in and always inspires them to grow into Golf Professionals of their own. The Association is pleased to recognize Paul as the third Member to receive the PGA of Alberta Lifetime Achievement Award in the Leadership Category.

The PGA of Alberta’s Education Committee is proud to present the second annual 2018 winter “Teaching Summit” hosted in the Arizona area. This 3-day educational event will give a select group of PGA of Alberta members (16 participant’s max.) to observe interactive lessons with two of the most sought-after instructors in North America – Gabriel Hjertstedt and Martin Chuck. During the 8-hours of instruction each day, participants will take a 60-minute lesson to work on their own game as well as develop their coaching skills by observing the other participants take their lessons, always with the ability to ask questions in real time to both student and teacher.
The combined cost of taking a single lesson with each instructor would normally cost in excess of $800 CAD but PGA of Alberta members will have access to 16 hours of instruction at a fraction of that cost. Full details of the PGA of Alberta “Arizona Teaching Summit” and biographies of the both instructors can be found below.
*Please note that their are limited spots available and will be given on a first come first serve basis.
Every other year the PGA of Alberta sends a Compensation Survey to the membership to complete. The survey is a very important tool for our Association as it allows us to give our membership the most current earning potential in each area of the province based on their position. The more surveys that are filled out, the more accurate both the averages and high/low points will be. Please take 5-10 minutes to fill out the survey. Once completed, you will be sent a copy of the results.
Every Member will receive 5 PD points for completing the survey!

Round two of the Sunice/Bobby Jones Fall Championship at Royal Mayfair GC in Edmonton saw plenty of action throughout the round making for an exciting day. Conditions were much improved from round one for the field with temperatures hovering around 15 degrees and having no rain on the course.
After a hard fought battle on the course, Wes Heffernan (Golf Canada Centre) emerged as the 2018 Fall Championship winner thanks to his superb round one of 6-under 64. Wes followed up his opening round score with a solid 1-under 69 today to hold off all competitors and securing his place as the Champion with a two-day total score of 133 (7-under).
Not without competition, Heffernan was challenged all day by Stefan Cox (Calgary G&CC) who shot the round-two low 4-under 66. Stefan’s efforts today secured his 2nd place finish in the Championship which included four birdies and fourteen pars to fall two shy of Wes at 135 total (5-under).
Finishing third in the Championship one back of Cox was local favourite Mike Belbin (Royal Mayfair GC). Playing at his home course, Mike had an excellent second round of 3-under 67 to finish with a total of 136.
Rounding out the top five was Riley Fleming (NGA Dome) finishing in fourth with a 139 (1-under) and Kent Fukushima (Redwood Meadows G&CC) in fifth with a 141 (1-over).
Final tournament of the PGA of Alberta schedule is the Pro-Assistant hosted at Kananaskis Country GC on October 1 & 2.
Forty-four of Alberta’s top competitors teed off for round one at the newly formed PGA of Alberta Fall Championship hosted at Royal Mayfair GC and proudly sponsored by long-time PGA of Alberta partner, Sunice/Bobby Jones. The weary weather forced players to dress for cold and wet conditions throughout the day with temperatures hovering around 10 degrees. Fortunately the rain held off for the majority of the day giving the players almost ideal playing conditions.
Playing in his tenth event this season and hunting for his third victory is Wes Heffernan (Golf Canada Centre) who started his opening round at the 1:20pm time and finished with a 6-under 64 to give himself a commanding lead and only one off the course record. Wes was able to finish hole 18 with a beautiful 50-foot putt for birdie to increase his lead. Four strokes behind Wes in sole possession of second is Craig McArthur (Blackhawk GC) who finished round one with a score of 2-under 68. Close behind the two leaders in a four-way tie for third place is Riley Fleming (NGA Dome), Stefan Cox (Calgary G&CC), local fan favorite Mike Belbin (Royal Mayfair GC) & Greg McGarry (Glendale G&CC) who finished the first 18 holes with a score of 1-under 69.
Close behind the leaders shooting an even-par round of 70 is Kent Fukushima (Redwood Meadows G&CC), Scott Borsa (Devon GC) & Braden Chown (Desert Blume GC). Round two is set for a competitive day of golf as there is 12 players that are plus one or better that all have the ability to put some pressure on the leaders.
Round two will resume tomorrow morning (Tuesday, September 11th) at 11am. Players will have a chance to improve upon their round one scores as the weather forecast is showing for minimal wind and temperatures reaching a high of 15 degrees. Follow the @PGAofAlberta on Twitter for live scoring updates tomorrow.
