The PGA of Alberta is proud to officially announce the Top 100 PGA of Alberta Golf Professionals for 2024 as determined by the rankings in the Top 100 Program presented by TaylorMade Golf Canada. See the list below for more details! These Members will receive a custom Top 100 logo recognizing their accomplishment.

Award Winner - Greg Johnson (Golf Future)

Greg finished the year with 90 points to win his first PGA of Alberta Top 100 award. Following closely behind in second place was Bryce Halverson (Carnmoney GC) with 87 points and Joseph Busetto (Edmonton Petroleum G&CC) took third place with 74 points.

This year the PGA of Alberta will award a "Rookie of the Year". This award will be given to the member with the highest point total who became a PGA of Canada Apprentice Professional the year prior.

In a shortened program rotation that only lasted nine months, 539 PGA of Alberta professionals received at lease 1 point as this initiative continues to grow year after year.

Award Winner - Jeff MacGregor (Glendale G&CC)

This year saw another exciting finish with two members being tied for 2nd, Stephen Yanitski (Valley Ridge GC) and Samuel Kirkness (Inglewood G&CC), finishing just 2 points behind Jeff MacGregor (Glendale G&CC) who finished with an incredible 127 points.

This is the highest point total in the history of the Top 100 program, and thirteen Members finished the year with at least 100 points. This program continues to grow year after year, showcasing the development within the PGA of Alberta.

Special shout-out to the following facilities for all having multiple Professionals inside the Top 20 of the program this year; Golf Channel Academy at Cottonwood, Golfuture YYC, Valley Ridge GC/ Valley Ridge Golf Academy, and Ranch G&CC (The).

New for 2024 - Program Rotation Year
After internal review to align with PGA of Canada, the Association will revert to the original program rotation from October - September. For 2024, the program year will begin January 1, 2024 and run until September 30, 2024 including points for attending the 2023 Buying Show. This will allow the winner from each year to be nominated for the PGA of Canada’s Tex Noble Professional Development Award.

Sam is no stranger to being involved in the Association as he was the winner of the former Professional Development Program in 2018, the final year of the program before turning into the Top 100 Program.

As we’ve seen the last several years in the Top 100 Program, it was an exciting race to the very end with two other members - Greg Johnson (Inglewood G&CC) and Bryce Halverson (Carnmoney GC), finishing within 7 points of Sam to claim second and third place.

With the Top 100 Program presented by Foresight Sports Canada & TaylorMade Golf Canada finishing on September 30th, members are doing all they can to move up in the rankings to finish inside the exclusive top 100 list. Points in the following two categories have recently been awarded to members that qualify; Mentorship Program and PGA of Alberta Committee Involvement.

After a recent point update, we now have a new leader in the program! Sam Kirkness (Inglewood G&CC) has taken over top position in the standings at 88 points overall. Sam is aiming for his first Top 100 Award but was the winner of the former Professional Development Program back in 2018. The Professional Development Program was revamped in 2019 to today’s Top 100 Program.

The competition is not over yet though with our former point leader Greg Johnson (Inglewood G&CC) sitting only one point back of Sam at 87. This is setting up for an interesting finish to the program year as both Greg and Sam hail from the same club so bragging rights are on the line. Remaining in third place is Assistants’ Board President Bryce Halverson (Carnmoney GC) at 81 points.

Please remember that points are still being tallied and will continue to be tallied in the first week of October. Award Finalists for 2022 will be counted in this program year, as well as Extracurricular Approval Form submissions before the end of day on Friday, September 30th.

UPDATE FOR 2023 - NEW PROGRAM ROTATION YEAR
After review of the program, the Association will now use a calendar year moving forward for the program year rather than the previous October to September of the following year model. For 2023, the program year will begin October 1, 2022 and go until December 31, 2023 to cover the gap of the rotation change. After that year is finish, the Top 100 Program will run from a January 1 to December 31 timeline.

There are several reasons for this change in the program year rotation. One of the primary goals was to better spread out major Association programs and events allowing for a balanced calendar. The Association will be able to focus more on specific programs and events throughout the year with a more balanced schedule. Another objective was to increase engagement with the membership during the off-season. With the program year now ending December 31st, members will continued to be engaged with the program until the end of the year to ensure they are maximizing their point total.

The winner of the Top 100 program for 2023 will be recognized at the Annual General Meeting in March of 2024. The current top 10 in the standings (as of September 29th) are listed below.

As of July 23^rd, the current leader in the standings of the Top 100 Program presented Foresight Sports Canada is Board Member Josh Fleming of GOLFTEC Calgary Beacon Heights. Josh has finished in fourth place in each of the last two years of the Top 100 program so let’s see if he can maintain his lead down the final stretch to win the award for the first time.

With the golf season well underway, we wanted to provide a standings update on the PGA of Alberta Top 100 Program. This is year three of the revamped Top 100 Program (formerly the Professional Development Program) presented by Foresight Sports Canada. The Top 100 Program is based on pre-defined measurable criteria and is designed to recognize PGA of Alberta members who dedicate their time and demonstrate proven abilities in advancing the Association’s interests for the benefit of all Golf Professionals.

As of June 3^rd, we have a 3-way tie for top spot between Alex Bunner (Belvedere G&CC), Stephen Yanitski (Valley Ridge GC) and Assistants’ Board President Bryce Halverson (Valley Ridge GC), all sitting at 39 points for this program year. All three members will continue to add points to their total in hopes of being named this year’s Top 100 Award recipient at the Awards Banquet in October. Last year’s winner Chris Ward (Edmonton Petroleum G&CC) is sitting within striking distance at 36 points as he looks to be the first member in PGA of Alberta history to win the Top 100 Award in back-to-back years! Congratulations to Chris Ward of the Edmonton Petroleum G&CC on winning this year’s Top 100 Award! Chris finished the program year with 104 points to win by just one point! It was a goal of Chris’ this year to win the Award and he accomplished that by increasing his point total by 56 overall compared to last year, going from T-19^th in the standings in 2019 to winning the title.

As of July 17th, Chris Ward from the Edmonton Petroleum G&CC remains in the lead of the Top 100 at an impressive 81 points! Chris will be looking to keep his lead during the final stretch of the program year which ends at the end of September as well as surpass last year’s Top 100 Award winner Sean Thompson’s (currently in 2^nd place this year) point total of 91. The current Top 10 in the standings are:

With the first year of the Top 100 Program presented by Foresight Sports Canada in the history books, the Association looks forward to building on the successes to further recognize members for their dedication and commitment while continuing to advance their careers through professional development.

New for 2020, the Top 100 Program will now reward points for attending education seminars/sessions or volunteerism within the golf industry at non-PGA of Alberta administered initiatives. For example, if a member attends an education event or volunteers with another golf organization, they will be eligible to receive Top 100 points for this.

All requests for points for non-PGA of Alberta administered initiatives must be submitted through the Extracurricular Approval form on the website. Some examples of outside education/volunteerism acceptable for Top 100 points will include (but not limited to):

Examples

• Education Workshops (Junior Golf, Teaching, Coaching, Golf Operations, etc.)
  • Education Workshops must be administered by golf related organization OR if run by non-golf related organization, must be relevant to the golf industry
  • PGA of Canada Training Academy courses not eligible for points
• Industry Volunteer at non-PGA of Alberta administered initiatives (Golf Clinic, Tournament Support, Junior Programs, etc.)
  • Must not be compensated in order to be eligible for Top 100 points

*Please note that PGA of Canada education (Tee Talks Live, CDC, CNC, Webinars, etc.) is already eligible for Top 100 points with submission of form (required education through PGA of Canada Training Academy courses not eligible for points).

Award Winner...
Congratulations to Sean Thompson of Cottonwood G&CC, winner of the Top 100 Award this year after accumulating the most points (91) to win by a margin of 10. Sean was the winner of the Award in 2017 (formerly the Professional Development Program) and has been ranked consistently in the top 10 over the last five years.

“I am incredibly proud to be the recipient of the inaugural Top 100 Award" said Sean. "Outside of doing a good job at our various facilities, I view it as our responsibility as Golf Professional’s to grow the game at every opportunity and to have an award that recognises Professional’s for developing their skills to better service the local golfing community is a great asset for our Association"

The winner of the yearly award will be recognized at the Awards Banquet during the annual Buying Show and will be given to the Member with the most points accumulated. Every Buying Show begins a new year for the Top 100 Program and will conclude in October of the following year. We are delighted to revamp this program into something bigger for our Members and introduce new initiatives.

Top 100 Professional: As part of this new program, the PGA of Alberta will acknowledge the Top 100 Professionals which will be the top 100-point earners for that year of the program. These members will be recognized as a “Top 100 Professional” for that year and will receive a custom Top 100 logo in which they can use to further promote themselves as Golf Professionals.

Extracurricular Activities: In addition to receiving points through attending PGA of Alberta events, Members are eligible to receive points by attending PGA of Canada Education Sessions. In order to receive these points for the Top 100 Program, Members are required to submit an Extracurricular Approval Form. If the form is not submitted for any PGA of Canada events you attended, points will not be rewarded. This form can be found on the Top 100 Program page.

Cash Prizes: In addition to recognizing the Top 100 Professionals, the PGA of Alberta will offer cash prizes as an added incentive to the top 7-point earners for this year. Total cash prizes will equal $4,000! The prizes will be distributed as follows:

• Encouraging Members to participate in all Association programs
• Rewarding Members for their continued support and contributions to the Association
• Encouraging Members to grow professionally by being involved in different areas of the Industry
